Detent Cable Bent??

Hey guys, I have a little problem and I am not sure at how to fix it. I took one trans out of a junk 86 Camaro to put into an 87 one. They are both automatic and the "good one" ran fine on the ride home. But taking it out we forgot to disconnect the detent cable, so it was basically hanging from the cable. we eventually just cut the cable (because we didn't know how to take it off properly). Now we put it in and it doesn't shift right. Is it possible that we bent the detent cable. And yes we tried to adjust it.

Thanks Chris

What are you calling the "detent" cable?

Not really, the cable jacket should have taken any strain. What's it doing that makes you say it's not shifting right?

Re: Detent Cable Bent??

Well it is going to really high rpms, and basically wont shift. Occasionally it will shift into second, and never into third gear

And you replaced the cable after you cut it?

Re: Detent Cable Bent??

No, it came out of a junk camaro. So it didn't bother to. When we removed the bad trans from the good camaro we knew how to remove it and did it properly.

Re: Detent Cable Bent??

So... you've put the "good" transmission into the "good" car, with a cut and disconnected TV cable?

Re: Detent Cable Bent??

We removed the cut tv cable from the good trans and hooked the good trans up in the good camaro with its tv cable.

All I really need to know is can I bend what the tv cable connects to into the trans??? And if so what does it take to fix?

Sounds like you need to readjust the TV cable

Re: Detent Cable Bent??

are you saying you applied pressure on the hook inside the transmission?

Re: Detent Cable Bent??

Omg, yes!!!! That is exactly it, I didn't know exactly how to say it. And I did i little more that apply pressure, just about all of the transmission was hanging from the hook.

well if that's the case, then your best bet would be to head on over to a junk yard and pull off the part you need... I would first take the old tranny's pan off and play around to see what actually has to come out in order to get what you need... straightening the hook is not going to be an option in this occasion....

Re: Detent Cable Bent??

Ok now I feel like a dork... lol... you already have a bad tranny, do you still have it, the one you took off... just take whatever you need from that one, unless it's damaged as well....
