What would cause the tranny to NOT shift?

I have been running a 700R4 in my '87 since day 1. When I installed the 395 stroker motor, I also purchased a Pro-Built 700R4 (put my factory 700R4 in the corner of the garage). I used the govenor out of my factory 700R4 in the Pro-Built 700R4. The tranny has been shifting just about right for me at WOT at about 6,000 RPM. But now it wont shift. I have been hitting the rev limiter of 6800 RPM several times now. What would be the root cause for this? I have checked the tranny fluid level while hot and it read the correct level for hot.

Can I make a small adjustment to the detent cable to get the tranny to shift at 6,000 instaed of hitting the rev limiter? If yes, which way to go on the adjustment?

I am going out to recheck the fluid level.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: What would cause the tranny to NOT shift?

One thing that I did was to replace the rear tranny mount from a rubber factory type to a polyeruthane unit. This pushes the rear end of the tranny up 1/2" to 1" higher than the factrory location. Maybe this has caused the detent cable to act different. What do you guys think?

Pull your govenor back out and look at the gear. It sounds like you have stripped the plastic teeth.

Is it doing this in all gears? mine wouldnt shift from 2-3 once and it was because I burned the clutch packs for the 3-4 gears. Dont expect this to be a problem for your fresh tranny but you never know.

Does sound like a govenor problem

Re: What would cause the tranny to NOT shift?

Thank you for the replies. I have solved the problem of no up-shifting. I had installed a polyurethane rear tranny mount, replacing the weak rubber factory type. The new unit lifted the rear end of the tranny about 1/2" or more, causing the detent cable to be out of adjustment. All I had to do was to push the detent cable forward thru the mounting backet on the side of the intake plenum about 1/8".... I did it to myself!
