Auto trans shift stutter while feathering peddle, what's going on?
Hey all,
was out driving the other day and noticed something odd. After I'm at speed (say ~50 mph), if I let off the gas and just feather the throttle a bit to maintain speed, and or let it the car slow down and just give it a little gas now and then, the car seems to stutter. It almost feels like its trying to shift between gears up and down, back and forth. While its doing this, the car seems to buck a little bit too. What could be going on? It stops if I give it more throttle or let off the gas.
I'm not sure it's the engine as its purring like a kitten at idle and getting good power when I open her up, without any issues. Any help would be appreciated!

Mine did that for a LOOOONG time. Exact same scenario. I'm not sure what fixed it because my car had to be parked for a while and I fixed a lot on it during the 3 months it was out of commission. I re-ran a ton of vacuum lines, re-worked the timing, replaced 3 fuel injectors, and fixed some un-related electrical issues. Something solved it. I'm willing to bet the fuel injectors since you said you had a good idle

if your engine doesn't get the proper fuel into each cylinder to ignite it could throw it off and make it stumble like that. my dad's truck has a bad injector in the 7th cylinder and it runs like crap when going up hill. it's like your car, has to go all or nothing on the pedal to avoid that bucking

Thanks rick... I just figured a bad injector would throw a code or something so I wasn't thinking it was the engine and figured it was something more like the tranny. I'll take a look.

No problem! You'd think it would throw a code, mine never did... Wanted to warn you before you did what I did and breezed through all that cash. This problem is why I rebuilt my tranny. Imagine how pissed I was 1500 bucks later when I drove it home and it did the same thing.

If it is bad injectors (i'm assuming your car is TPI), make sure you do a resistance check on all of them before buying new parts.
