Lsd/axel problem. You decide

Hello every one, I own a 91 Z28 over in the uk. I decided to change the pads on the back end only to find i have what appears to be horizontal movement in the half shafts but at the moment only appears to be horizontal not vertical. Any one hear of this before? its about 1/4 inch play. Many thanks UK-1991-Z28

Welcome to TGO. A bit of play, because of the "C" clip, is normal.

The C clip holds the axle in place. As long as they're in place, one per side, all's well. You'll find a pic (post #5) in the following FAQ:

Re: Lsd/axel problem. You decide

The c clip goes on the axle on the end that is inside the rear end. There is a groove cut into the axle that the c clip goes in. You push the axle in and then put the c clip into the groove. Then you pull out on the axle and the c clip fits into a recess in the axle gear on that side. Then the cross shaft is put into the differential and it keeps the axle from moving out and letting the c clip fall out. There is always a little free play because the c clip doesn't fit tight in this groove. If you have the Auburn limited slip differential then as the cones in the differential wear the free play will increase. If you have close to 1/4 inch then you must have a lot of wear on the cones.

Re: Lsd/axel problem. You decide

Do you have the 10 bolt or 9 bolt rear end? Count the number of bolts holding the cover on to see which one you have. This is important because these rear ends use different methods of holding the axles in.

IIRC, some cars were equipped with the 9-bolt from 85-90, so your 91 'should' be a 10-bolt, if the rear is original to the car.

It has a ten bolt rear end. I have ordered a rebuild kit but i need to find out what the torque should be when putting it back together.

Re: Lsd/axel problem. You decide

Did you order a new Auburn? If you don't replace the differential then you are still going to have the same amount of axle end play. I recommend getting a new Eaton Posi to replace the Auburn. It is a FAR better differential than the Auburn. This will take care of the axle end play. A new Eaton is $445.
