auto to 5 speed swap? about vss please help

I did this swap about 4 years ago, but I just took the wires that came from the 700 r4 and hid them, I was wondering did that tranny have a vss? does the t-5 have one? the 700 came fromthe car )86 Z28) and the t-5 came from a 88 iroc, If the t-5 has one where does it go? and how do i hook it up? if it does not then will a 5-speed chip take care of the check engine light? I replaced the one behind the speedo in the dash already. Can I fool the vss? thanks

You need a VSS for a T5 with a cable speedo, since thats what your 86 Z28 has. They should be plentiful if you place an ad in the classifieds here. The VSS is in the same place the automatic one was, on the driver's side in the rear of the trans.

Should the tranny have come with this? The only electrical hook up on teh trans is for the backup likghts, it is a two wire conector.

Just go to the junkyard and get one, then go to the dealer and get the right gears. It's a little late now to worry about whether it should have come with it. It might not even have had the type you need in the first place.

The vss needs some kind of power correct? where does it get it's power from? the dealer said they don't list one in the tranny, the tranny has a cable driven speedo.

Duh, i just now read your sig... in that year, your VSS is on the back of your instrument cluster. It's a little yellow box which might be the thing you replaced. Does your speedo work? if so, then everything to do with the trans is there and working.

Are you getting the code for No VSS Pulses?

Yes I am and I think it is becaus eof my chip, I am getting a computer from the same year and everything as my car but the car was a 5-speed, I am going to swap chips or the whole computer not sure yet, I went to gm and they said there are 4 diffrent chips for the 5 speed car, 2 for a m39 and 2 for a mc4, I beleive I have a m39 even though it is a world class from a 88, I don't know what to do, or what the diffrences in the chips are.

The auto ans 5-speed both use the same type of VSS, so that difference in the chip is not the cause of your situation. Also, it doesn't matter where the trans came from.

The little yellow box is an optical thing; it shines a LED up into the speedo and "looks" at the spinning part that is attached to the cable. So as long as your speedo works you have everything you need from the trans to the dash. The problem is not in the trans, or the cable.

The VSS has a 3-lead wiring harness IIRC that plugs into a little pigtail hanging off the flex circuit on the back of the dash. Is all that as it should be?

Gmand all of the chip companys say that the auto chip is looking for a vss sensor that the 5 speed chip is not looking for and that is why I get the check engine light, I replaced the one behind the dash already.
