Rear end banging

Hi everyone, my car is an 88 IROC 350 TPI. I have a 700R4 built with a fairbanks shift kit and a 2100 stall. The car shifts fine under normal conditions. At WOT from 1-2, I hear a loud bang from the rear, the car stays in neutral for a few secs after I let off the gas, and then finally it goes into a gear. I have a 9 bolt posi bw 2.77 rear. Is my rear end fried and should I get a new rear or just new gears? Could it have anything to do with having old or low fluid?I don't hear my rear whining at all but the car is very lound even at 700rpms so its hard to tell. Thanks everyone for their help.
