Just got tranny rebuilt and no 5th gear !!
I picked up my tranny from the shop on friday to swap for my auto and just now got done with everything. I went out to take it for a test drive and it's making a wining sound when I give it some gas (in any gear), and I have NO 5th GEAR! Man I'm pissed, I think the guy just threw it toghter because I was bugging him (had it for 3 weeks). I know he had to replace the main(output) shaft because the end was pitted, but nothing else was wrong with the unit besides the rebuilt kit. What could cause this ??? I'm gonna have a few words with the tranny guy tommorow (I didn't just spend the last 11 hours for nothing!).

There is no 5th gear in a 700R4. Do you mean the 4th gear? Overdrive?

No... Sorry, I didn't say it was a 5spd that I just got done swapping for a auto(haven't changed my sig yet). Anyway I can't get it to go into 5th gear(all other gears and reverse is fine), it doesn't grind or anything. It won't "click" into gear no matter how hard I try. I keep hearing a wineing sound during acceleration, It's not extremly loud, but it is noticable and caused me to be concerned. Do you know what could cause this ?

I have the same whining... My gear changes used to get harder as the tranny got hotter... I had the Clutch cable adjusted, and all gear changes are fine all the time now, but the whining is still there.. Only whines through 1st, 2nd and very quietly in 3rd.. I am unsure what this is? throwout bearing??? When stopped, it goes away when you press the clutch pedal, and comes back when you release it? Is this the problem you are having?

I think it does it in all gears 1-4 when the clutch is pressed in, but I'll have to drive it more to make sure...

i had a friend with this problem in his t5
it ended up being the thrust bearing behind the input shaft but there are several of them throughout the trans and it coud be any one of them
this could contribute to you not being able to get 5th gear

It sounds like the 5th gear shift fork is broken or installed backwards. T5's are really a 4 speed with a 5th gear added on. The 5th gear is in the tail shaft rather than the main case which makes it easy to access. Should be a quick fix once its out of the car.
Reverse and 5th use the same shift rod. You didnt mention reverse not working, so the shift rod should be OK.
I have some non WC T5 parts. If you need anything, email me at merf23@yahoo.com

Well, I pulled the tranny last night and took it back to the guy that rebuilt it. He owns a reputable shop down the street and stays busy most of the time, but he said he'd have it fixed Thursday/Friday latest. I guess I'll just have to bear with it till then.
BTW I've read on a previous post some where that you can get different size throwout bearings, but I can't remeber where they said to get them and what application to ask for. My pedal (hydralic) I releasing about a inch off the floor, so if I bleed it and it still doesn't help I'd like to change it out.
-Thanks Joe
