700r4 from a 4.3 truck
I've gone through all the wikipedia data on the 4.3 v6 truck engines and it seems like it is quite similar to the SBC. Someone is selling a 700r4 that went with a 4.3 out of a late 80's GMC jimmy and I'd like to throw it behind my '88 305 for the summer. From what I've read I'm fairly certain i'd be good to go, but just wanted to run it past you guys.

You'll need the tail housing from an F body specific 700 and it'll bolt right in.
Depending on your plans for the car a new or re built governor is proabably a good idea.
Look up governors and how to modify them to see what I mean.
On the cheap side it's easy to simply lighten the current weights if the trans shifts early but be sure to keep metal out of the valve and wash the hell out of it anyway.
Soak it in new ATF before reinstaling.
The converter for the 3.4 is also essentialy the same as the Corvette converter.
It's a higher stall than the standard F body unit (1800 +- for the F body 2000-2200 for thr Vette.) The real world stall of the converter in the truck will be less than it will be behind a stronger V8 but you will se a real difference over a standard piece.

I've still got my fried 700 in the car right now so if this does go through I should be OK for snagging some of the good parts

cant believe I forgot to mention this but the trans needs to be from a 2wd truck.
The 2wd will be identical to yours with the 4 bolt tail housing, the 4wd will have a larger 6 bolt patern.

The 4.3 governor should give you a WOT 1-2 upshift at 4400 rpm. If you have a stock LG4 or LO3, that's just fine.
