700r4's: Who -can't- hold a gear at any rpm?
I've always seen this on shift kits... "allows you to hold a gear at any rpm"- yet, I've always been able to keep a gear, no matter what the engine rpm's are. In fact, I've made some racing "mistakes" where I'm in 2nd, but -think- I'm in 3rd, and have dropped the trans down into first- ouch.
What happens on these trannies that can't hold a gear? Does the trans upshift on its own, even though the stick's in, say, second?
I wonder if it's year-related... I have an '86 700r4, and I know later years were changed, such as the '87's auxiliary valve body. I wonder if those changes prevent "holding a gear at any rpm", or, if it's just fancy words that are used to sell a shift kit.

I believe you've figured them out lol I have always been able to hold a gear, in fact I ran 1st up to 5500 by accident wed. at englishtown cause i forgot to shift...doh. even if the trans will shift out of a gear at certain RPM you'll probably never rev that high

i am not sure but i know many cars do this. we were beating the crap out of a dodge interpid rental car...put it in first and mat the pedal...it will **** through the gears on its own. once the tranny builds up soo much pressure it will shift (i think) so it is normal i would say. good for it? i couldnt imagine it would be good but i am no tranny tech.

My dads 86 GMC 4x4 "NON CC no tc lockup" Will shift into second even if its in 1st at about 35mph. So we can eliminate the computer doing the shifting. It wont shift into 3rd though unless you actually put it in 3rd. One would think that sice it goes from 1st to second locked in 1st that if you put it in 2nd it would go to 3rd but it wont. So Agree with 87tpi420 its pressure related Gm safty thing.

Edit forgot the point This trans in my dads truck is a fresh rebuild not the original. the original one with a B&M shift kit would hold gear.?????

It depends on the calibration of the tranny. This applies to not only the 700 but all of the GM trannies (and at least some if not all of the other US makes). ALL 700's that come from the factory WILL upshift out of manual first at some RPM, it's just that some of you will wipe out some valves in the process! These usually are the factory hot rod types, but many times they will be ABLE to rev higher than, say a truck will.
You see, the factory knows that people will see if the redline really is just that or, that if someone is pissed and figures they will get a new engine if they keep it in first up to 90 MPH so they designed in an override feature. The new cars can track this sort of thing too so Big Brother really is watching you now!
On that Intrepid, when you move the shifter you might be surprised to know that the Manual Valve inside the tranny (the one the shifter moves) does not even MOVE when you go from Drive down to Low! This is merely telling the computer (through the manual lever position sensor) what you would like to do. The computer then decides if that is OK to do.

Mine forces a shift at about 6300--I wasn't looking that close. Burn-out got a little carried away. The old BFG Comp T/A VR's would really spin easy.
