Does anybody know what type of rear end I have?
I have a stock 91 Camaro rs and I am wondering what type of rear end I have, what I mean by that is what type of gears are in it. Also I am wanting to upgrade and I don't know that much about how to go about doing it, should I get better gears or just replace the whole rear end. I plan on droping a Lt-1 in my car and I would like my rear end to be a little bit stonger when I do the swap, I would also like to know what type of tranny I have, I am debating on rebuildind it or just replacing it when I do my swap. Any information or advice would be grately apperiacated.
Thanks Matt
Thanks Matt

Just a guess, but since it is such a common grocery getter car the standard rear would be 10-bolt 7.625 gear open 2:73 ratio.

Read. Read. Read.
Not knockin ya, but there is a rediculous amount of info on this board to help ya with your swap. Read everything and you'll likely only need to ask a few questions in the end.
You can swap just the gears, or the entire rear if funds allow. If you are keeping it under 400 hp, I would upgrade the current rear end rather than spend uber-cash for a Moser or Strange unit. Decide on the gear ratio you want, then hit Summit or any online parts place for your size.
Also look into a posi unit, as you don't want to do a one tire fire after all that work. SLP units can be had on ebay for less than $100.
Get a strong diff cover. I've got one from TA and it helps stiffen the carrier so stuff doesn't get out of place and damaged. $100 or so. Please don't get chrome.
A rebuild kit would be handy for the shop techs, but they probably can get it cheaper.
Please don't do it yourself yet, if you don't have the tools and a knowledgeable person looking over your shoulder.
And if your car is stock, it has the 700R4. A decent 4 speed auto, it can take the LT1, especially if prepped for it. It probably has some miles on it and is need of freshening anyway, so I'd have it rebuilt with a Transgo kit and call it a day. No need to go crazy unless you're thinking mid 12s or faster IMO.
