I have an 82 firebird with a holly 650 and pre 80 distributer- no pollution controll or ecm computer how can i get my torque converter to lock up i believe i have a 700 r4 tranny 3 speed. ther are two wires going to the solinoid is there a way to make a switch? or shoul i even bother. just seems like revving 3000 rpm at 70 mph is alot especially when i like to do 90. would it help any to lock the converter by a switch?

If this is the stock transmission, it is a TH200C, not a 700. But, getting the TCC to lock is the same - either rig up a switch per the tech article on this board, or get a kit from Jegs or Summit. You'll probably reduce the RPMs by a couple hundred at cruise.

yes it is a stock tranny so it probably is the 200 any wayto make sure? my vin code actually tells me it is a trans am if that makes a differnce.
by the way car is in mint shape all the way around and is pretty much stock except for the computer tires wheels and sound system- oh yeah the $2000.00 paint job. which is why i want to make it as fast as it looks. I have a 69 350 4 bolt to put in it as sonn as i get a little cash runs at 280 hp or around there stock. motor came from a chevy pickup still runs great but as you know i need to beef up like the frame and tranny first plus i would like to rebuild the motor with bigger heads and maybee better cam and lifters it's been a while since i have done anything of the sort. since the family came along no time. house kids work you know. so i have to get up to date on some things- 10 years ago i had a hard time finding a sub frame for under 400.00 now there everywher for 100.00. thanks for reply

If the shift indicator plate has P-R-N-D-2-1 or something like that, it's a TH200C. If it has P-R-N-O-3-2-1 (one more position), it's a TH700R4. The overdrive tranny wasn't available in '82 3rd gens.
Don't forget the driver's side dipstick on that 350. Headers no problem, but stock exhaust manifolds block the tube.
I certainly know about the time thing and reasons you stated. "Work-in-progress" is almost a constant.
