best gear for 92 Camaro

I am planning to change the gears in my 92 Camaro. Im planning on 373. My Camaro is fairly stock...only mods are a computer chip, underdrive pulleys, edelbrock tes headers, high flow cat converter, and flowmaster 80 series catback. What would be the best gear for my car. My car is a daily driver, but at times I have the need for SPEED....

If you want speed and drive daily, I'd go with 3.42s or 3.73s. I put 3.73s in mine and luv em As soon as I find time, I need to recalibrate my speedo...you'll have to do this also if you want an accurate reading.

I have 3:73 in mine.. and they are awsome. If you plan on any kind of highway driving, go with the 3:42. On the highway i now get 240 miles to the tank!! But that is crusing at 80 odd most of the time

I am doing a gear swap on my 86 Z but I decided to go with 3.42's instead of 3.73's. I really love the top end on my car and although 3.73's are not that low it will hurt your top end a bit. I've got a 72 Nova with a 700r4 with 3.90 gears and it tops at 120-130, acceleration is awesome though. I know a Nova and a Camaro are two different body styles but still my point is u will lose top end.

Will install 3.73's later on and might go with a more aggresive cam.As of 4/01 added Hooker Headers,2.5inchpipes with 40 s. Flowmasters.Ignition upgrade include: MSD Coil and MSD module.

D'sZ28, this link will explain installing gears: http://sethirdgen.org/10bolt2.htm

i also had the exact same setup as you and did the sawp. you can get just about anywhere and most are reliable: richmond, strange, auburn.

i went to http://slponline.com and got both my 3.73s and HD Torsen unit. you can also check out http://www.jegs.com. Good luck.

3.73's are nice but for your application I would recommend the 3.42's

[I know this info was posted for another question, but it's essential for anyone considering changing their own gearsets. - 89IROCZ28]

Properly installing a set of rear gears takes experience & the right equipment to get the gearset to perform as it was designed. This means everything from quiet operation to strength to long life.
The primary measurements used to properly set up a gearset are the pinion depth & backlash of the gears. Preloading of the pinion & carrier bearing is also critical.

Places like Summit Racing can help you get all the pieces (carrier, bearings, seals, shims, etc.) to do the job right. However, one piece of equipment that is often overlooked is a 'pinion depth gauge' to correctly set how deep the pinion sits into the ring gear. Shims are used under the inner pinion bearing cone to accomplish this. Using one is a little tricky, but isn't everything until you do it a couple of times? The job can be done w/o it, but that takes even more experience & ingenuity.

Unless you're willing to risk the cost of a gearset, additional parts and all your time & effort, look into having a reputable shop set your gears up. Also, be sure to get references before putting the gears & car or axle in their hands. A friend of a friend of mine learned the hard way, after his gearset self destructed w/ only a few hundred miles on it, that some shops know how to install gearsets, but don't know how to properly set them up.

I bought a pinion depth gauge along w/ a very good instructional video tape from the following company. They advertised the most reasonable price I've seen for one.

Sorry to be so long winded, but I hope this information helps you or anyone else considering changing their gearsets.
