Im about to weld the tubes to the rearend. Im guessing its a cast steel if you were able to weld it with 7018 rod

not to put down your welder buddy, but i'd bet a dolalr or two that it's cast steel. since we're on the subject, i have degree in quality engineering, am an AWS certified welding inspector, have or am certified to mil-specs, ASME, and AWS. welded since i was 16 and am older than dirt now. i ahve welded a boat load of rear ends, tubes to center sections and for the most part have used 3/32 e7018 and on a few steel mig with no problems. i like to use 2 passes when i weld, mostly from welding pipe and not wanting leaks, but i 2 pass the axle tubes.

Did I miss something? What rear end are we talking about? 10-holer Saginaw?

Yes it is a 10 bolt. I am having it welded in the morning. The guy I talked to at the Machine shop said He thought it would be cast steel.
