9 bolt axle bearings...Set-9 doesnt look right
Just got the set-9 bearings from autozone and they dont look right. 9 bolts have the tapered bearings that are visable. The set 9 bearings i couldnt see the bearings themselves. They were fully encased. Is this right? Am i missing something? Did i get the wrong ones? Even the seals dont look the same. I followed that article by drain and i got the bearings that he wrote up.

There are many versions of the same bearing. As long as the ID, OD and thickness/depth is the same, it will work.
Fully encased just means it's a sealed bearing or it has dust covers over the rollers.

There is a tappered race in the axle housing. Does that come out? Cause if it doesnt i see no way of this working.

Hopefully you get an answer, from looking at the parts and from other searches I also got the set9. The guy at autozone gave me the set10 for some reason and said that they were for the otherside. Like the previous poster which is the correct part? Or a confirmation.

All i know is what i have are tapered bearings that look like they spread the load pretty well. These new ones are not as wide and a different design.

The tapered race needs to come out. Never replace a bearing without replacing the race.
The old bearing was probably a 2 piece bearing with a separate bearing and race and the new one sounds like it is probably a one piece bearing.
There are a couple of ways to remove the race. A slide hammer that can hook onto the back lip of the race is normally used. Sometimes it needs a 2 jaw attachment. I commonly remove races, especially ones in an aluminum hub, by welding a bead all the way around the surface of the race. The bead weld will cause the race to shrink and it can easily be removed.
The old bearing is probably pressed onto the axle. Does it use a wedding band to hold the bearing on? Will the new bearing slide onto the shaft to roughly where the old bearing is? (same ID)

Re: 9 bolt axle bearings...Set-9 doesnt look right
Wedding band? Sorry ive never gone this in depth with a diff so im lost a bit. I did this all to tighten up the posi on the 9 bolt. It was at this time that i noticed one of the seals was just starting to seap...or had seaped awhile ago (looked real old). The bearings themselves felt nice and smooth with no play so part of me is wondering if i should bother.
This is about what they look like. Im assuming by wedding band you mean that strip of metal holding the rollers in place?

And this is about what the new ones look like. These are obviously not the new ones but just show you why im questioning if they are right or not

The wedding band is the steel ring that is pressed on the axle after the bearing. It is there to help hold the bearing in place so that it doesn't slip off. It is made of softer metal so the press fit can be tighter on it. It MUST be replaced with the bearing. Never try to use one of these twice.
