700r4 questions... shifting strange...

i have a 700r4 obviously, when i ratchet it manually into first and drive normal from a dead stop it will go and shift into 2nd automatically. now im confused to why it shifts on its own? if i manually put it in 1st, shouldnt it stay in first until i click it up?? it goes into 2nd by itself but you have to manually shift to third. and it does the same if you stage it. it will start off in 1st...shift into 2nd... and unless i manually shift it into 3rd it wont go. normal??

in theory it shouldnt shift right? just like it you took a regualr auto car/truck and stick it in 1st it would stay there and bang off the limiter unless you shifted up, so that is where im lost.

Re: 700r4 questions... shifting strange...

It'll upshift at high RPM regardless of what position the shifter is in.

Re: 700r4 questions... shifting strange...

shift kits can cure that. buy a kit that says "will hold in any range to any rpm." you will still be able to retain your automatic shifts while in drive but when you pull it down gears it will stay in what you put it in. The shift kit made by transgo should suffice. get the transgo 2-3 and it'll take care of that.

I like this feature, it keeps you from blowing your motor on accident, cant remember how many times i left it in 1st messing around and it shifted which caught my attention to put it back in drive. It has to be pretty high in the rpm range to automatically shift.

i hate that feature because it is designed by the man-
i like to make things the way i think they should have been done. blowing motors would **** me off though if I was the one having to warranty them like the man-

Re: 700r4 questions... shifting strange...

You can hang the RPM's pretty good thou, mine wont shift it till its like almost 4 grand,

I wouldn't want to be able to accidentally drop my ride in 1st while doing 50ish either, which id assume controls this as well

Re: 700r4 questions... shifting strange...

the governor wouldn't allow it. even with the shift kit installed because it would be spinning too fast. the governor and valve body work together to determine shift points. it will hold shifting up but not do the same on downshifts if the speed is too fast-I've tried.

Re: 700r4 questions... shifting strange...

it will chirp them on downshift into first from second but that is it, and it won't do it every time. all other downshifts can't seem to force them before they want it.

Re: 700r4 questions... shifting strange...

so people that drag just deal with it?

mine doesnt shift until around 4k either but in a racing situation you would want it to run to a higher rpm.

bowtie overdrives built my trans ill give them a call and see what they say. thanks for all the answers!

People who drag usually put in a shift kit.

Re: 700r4 questions... shifting strange...

well i figured mine did... its a stage 3 built by bowtie overdrives and i know it has all the aftermarket goodies/corvette servos ect...

lets say the linkage is not properly hooked up, would that have something to do with it? cause i did crawl underneath the car and the linkage looked like hell. wasnt even tight.. i didnt get a chance to fix it today. ill tackle it tomorrow.

Linkage won't have anything to do with it.

Re: 700r4 questions... shifting strange...

type 1 v.b. plug hole "b", type two don't plug hole
drill partition for type of v.b.-drill to .157
discard old 3-2 valve and spring-install different new ones
drill a vent through bottom of bore below 3-2valve
drill .110 hole into bore not going through bottom
plug holes 5,f&h in the separator plate for type 1 v.b.
if plate has hole 4 plug it and holes 5,d&f for type 2 v.b.

if BTOverdr#$%^ knew it was supposed to be a car like that they should have taken care of it already---apparently they didn't-oops did I do that.
stage three should have IMO gotten the "full automatic shifts in "D", but holds any gear to any speed by moving shift lever" but that's just me. stage three sounds like maybe a stage JR. kit ? or similar.

i actually jacked the car up and adjusted the linkage and now it holds gears. so i guess a sloppy linkage does affect it. thanks for the help

Re: 700r4 questions... shifting strange...

The low/rev boost valve is the biggest deciding factor in this scenario. The stock ones will upshift per the governor.

If you're running it hard enough often enough to worry about "accidental donwshifting", it's time to get a real shifter.

Re: 700r4 questions... shifting strange...

Let me throw another scenario at ya'll. My son buys an 88 SC w/305TP.It's sat up for 2 years prior to him buying it.It runs ok and shifts "hard" but at what I would consider normal RPM.
Then he takes it to VoTech @ his high school. He puts a new filter in the trans (700r4) and goes to drive home and the car won't shift into Drive (3rd) until you hit 4500RPM. Shifts from 1st to 2nd "more or less normally" ,though. He "says" he only changed the filter, , ,....but he's an infant speed freak and I'm not sure he'd tell me if he did mess with something else.
"The less Dad Knows the better" kind of thing.
We did tighten up some loose trans mount bolts, too. is
This car is makin' me !!!!

Re: 700r4 questions... shifting strange...

If it sat for that long your going to have problems.
I'm not completely sure about that tranny, but the newer one's 4L60E for example, will shift harder when the clutches start slipping to prevent the slip and keep the trans going.
I'm not 100% a 700R4 would do that, but that would be my guess.

By changing the filter, and fluid, cause the pan has to be dropped. (This only get's 4 or 5 quarts)
The new fluid will clean the trans, normally your fine, but if it was bad, the additives will clean the clutches and they can slip more. This is why most people don't flush transmissions. Especially high mileage one's.

I think the reason it sat for 2 years is because it was slipping. Changing the fluid and filter is generally the best thing you can do.
I would say you need a rebuild now. Needed it before it was bought.
However he may have readjusted the TV cable and that could be why it has such a hight shift, however I doubt it. Wouldn't hurt to check though.

Re: 700r4 questions... shifting strange...

he probably forgot to remove the old seal for the old filter!
it doesn't come out of the trans when removing the old filter!
he probably installed the new filter (which already has a new seal installed on it) and now the filter isn't sealing properly!
CHECK IT OUT IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!!!
