Need tips on tranny takeout

Dropping the transmission tomorrow to install my new clutch. Never done this before, just looking for some hints on how to keep it from becoming a huge PITA and wasting a whole Sunday. Looks like the top 2 bolts on the flywheel cover are gonna be difficult.

you need to be careful with unbolting the torque arm.if you leave the rear end hanging, the pressure from the coil springs will cause it to rotate upwards and break stuff.so make sure you have your rear end supported with jack stands.

done this too many times in my '83 (converted to hydraulic clutch)

while you're clean, take apart the console enough to remove the rubber boot and then the shifter. a few screws on the boot will be under the edges of the carpet. remove the shifter from the tailhousing with 4 bolts.

It may be easier to remove the tranny from the bellhousing and then take the bellhousing off. see what you think (?) (it's half of one...six dozen of another ).

I've never had any problem with the torque arm. I always just removed the top bolt from the torque arm mount and eased the arm out the top to rest against the tunnel (still be careful though, I may have just been lucky all those times)

let me know if you need any other pointers

Well thanks for the tips guys.
Too bad I'm reading this after I took the tranny out. I had a few suprises, likethe top 2 bolts where the tranny meets the pressure plate cover being so awkward to get out. The tranny came out pretty easy, in fact this is soo rediculously easy thus far. Oh yea the 5 speed fell on my index finger so that hurts, doesnt feel broken though.

Man typing with 1 hand is a biotch!

Glad to see you undertook it yourself. How did it go? It shouldn't of been that hard because you had it already together. Lots of people get tricked on 5 speed swaps because they just have a pile of a parts and a half-*** Haynes manual. As for the previous post about adjustment shims .....

If you can picture this in your head, as the clutch fingers move away from the fork the fork rests closer to the engine and the slave is now extended more at resting postion which means when it becomes fully extended it has less room until it hits the top of it's bore. This is probably the first resurfacing of the flywheel so it shouldn't matter.

yep

Like I said, I didn't hear about that resurfacing thing until after mine was already done and I didn't have any problems (at least not in THAT area )

Cool, thanks alot man. I haven't completed the project, I'm allowing myself a few days to do the whole thing right (helps that I'm on spring break). During the whole removal of the 5 speed I was completely shocked at how EASY it was. I had more trouble with my passenger side valve cover than I did with this.

My boss reviewed how the guts of the clutch worked, and I've got a really good visual on how things work. Hopefully tomorrow I will have the Clutch installed and be ready to install the 5 speed by early evening.

P.S. Yeah I used the crappy haynes manual, but only as a loose guide, it always goes much easier if I play it by ear.
