9 bolt axle removal...Tips?

Hey im in the process of servicing my 9 bolt (new axle bears and shimming the posi). I have the four bolts holding the axles in removed. Is there a trick to getting the axles out? I heard slide hammer but i dont have one. Anything else that can be used in a pinch?

Hitting outwards? Your talking hitting right on the back side where the lugnut studs are? I still have the dust shield on as well. How the hell does that come off? Is it welded on?

I used an Axle puller that I borrowed from Autozone. Makes it alot easier. Make sure you have the backing plates unbolted...

I just have the 4 bolts unbolted. I didnt see anything else that could come off. By backing plate do you mean the dust shield or the part that i already have undone?

yep if i remember right, you just take off those 4 bolts and pound behind the hub section where the lug nuts are placed. I hit around that and it came out

Re: 9 bolt axle removal...Tips?

You must have gotten lucky then. I pounded for awhile but it didnt budge. I was using a long bolt that was just a bit smaller than the holes that mount the backing plate and axle in. I stuck it through those holes so i could get a nice square hit to the backside of the wheel mounting area of the axle. Nada. Im going to rent a axle puller from autozone as someone above suggested and make life easy on myself.
