Special Production AUSTRALIAN Rear??? Mechanic Bullsh*t or not?

Damn I havent been on this board in about a year. The kid who I sold my 86 TA to went to have 3.73's installed the other day by a performance shop that i kinda dont trust. He told the kid that he couldnt replace the gears becuase it was a special 1 of 100 Limited Australian Made rears and that they don't accept aftermarket gears? Ok now the entire time I owned the car and i used this forum I have never heard anything like that. Im doin some research so the kid doesnt get ripped off. The guy is tryin to sell him a 9" rear, which is jsut idiotic, a 305 does not need a 9", just extra weight. So is this bull**** or is it legit? im just lookin out for the kid so mommy doesnt have to spend more of her $$$ on his car.

He is telling the truth. Some high performance Trans Am came with a nine bolt rear end instead of the ten bolt rear end. There are 3.70 gears available for this rear end but there expensive and hard to find, but not impossible to find. Try strange, SLP, TPIS, and national drivetrain.

Car: 1990 Pontiac Trans Am

The Australian 9-bolt axle was available on 85-89 Camaro Z28's and Trans Am's, usually on the 350's but also found on the 305's. You can identify it by it having 9-bolts holding the cover on, hence its name. Its not rare, but aftermarkte support never really caught on. I know of three places that sell 3.70 gears for it.

I've never dealt with any of these companies, I just noticed they list the 3.70 9-bolt gear in their catalogs. I dont know if its possible to get the 3.45 gear anymore. Several Australian members of this board say that rear end is very common there, and is still used in new production cars. You might be able to contact a company in Australia about it, but shipping/handling/etc might be cost prohibitive.
The 9-bolt rear end is stronger than a 10-bolt, as its ring gear is 7.75" in diameter compared to the 10-bolts 7.5" or 7.625". Plus the 9-bolt does not use c-clips, further adding to its strength.

Car: 1987 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 IROC-Z
Engine: L98
Transmission: TeamTripp Performance
From the 'Camaro History' section of the Tech Data section on this site under 1987-

'G92 and L98(B2L) cars finally got the Borg-Warner HD 7.75 inch four pinion rear end, produced by GM Holden's Limited of Australia (Firebird WS6 cars went to this unit in 1986). These units can be identified by their 9 bolt (rather than 10) differential cover that has a rubber plug. The Borg-Warner logo is also cast into the bottom of the differential case. This rear axle came with tapered rather than straight roller bearings and a cone-clutch rather than disc-clutch limited slip unit. These units came painted black from the factory while most others were bare metal'
