87 GTA - 700R4 out again - what next?

My bro has a 87 GTA, 355 - supercharged - and has been through at least 7 rebuilds of a 700R4, including two different trannys. Now it's out again. He doesn't want to stick another 700R4 back in there, what are his options as far as putting a Turbo 350 or 400 in there? How hard of a retrofit is it? Are they that much better of a tranny for a car that eventually will hopefully put out about 400 - 450 hp? What's the limit on a GOOD rebuilt 700R4 PROPERLY rebuilt, I don't think the f00ls that rebuilt the tranny the 7 times knew much about it. I told him to rip out the 700R4 and put in a 5 or 6 speed, but oh well.

He actually took it to two different tranny places, both having ****ty luck. This last time they put in some type of **** that made the car not even kick down to the next gear, in order to "save the tranny"....whatever.

His major limitation is $$$. He's probalby looking at spending $800 TOTAL, parts labor etc for putting it in and buying the tranny.

Thanks guys

if you can get a 400 go for it it is supposed to be "bullet proof" well thats what I have heard but, never sreally saw too many of them. other wise the tail would be the differance and if you can get a th350 to fit than the 400 should as well.

outch 7 times!
yea you can proabably find a good used 350 at a junk yard for less than 500 bucks.
try that. i know parts stores sell waranty rebuilds for turbo 350s for around 600 or so but you need a 350 core. you think they would be glad to get a 700r insted of a 350 but there not . 350s can handel about 400 hp but i wouldent push it past that.
For the love of god pep use a trans cooler before you have problems

Fried the tranny this morning for the second time in a year. I'm not screwing around with a local rebuild. I'm buying a new tranny and torque converter from TCI. Also the problem with the tranny might not be the tranny at all but a sorry torque converter which will kill a tranny.

Flash, I tried TCI's tranny, and I had nothing but problems with it. Didnt shift right. Every shift was like the tranny mount was broken. It was supposed to be a lockup, but had no provisions for the ECM, so you had to do it manually. I just thought I would warn you. It took me no longer than a week to yank it out and get rid of it.

Don't waste your $$ give F.C. www.thetrannydoctor.com a call or visit. His tranny's will hold up to your abuse. Cheaper and higher quality than TCI.
