Re: Convert posi to nonposi?

You can change the whole rear axle or you can change the carrier inside. Changing the carrier would require a professional to set-up the gears correctly. Can I ask why you would want to do this?

I think you wrote it backwards then. You want posi. Don't we all... :-)

Re: Convert posi to nonposi?

Dang, sorry. I have been doing everything *** backwards today.
Yeah posi would be what I wanted to convert to. I just want my tires to wear evenly instead of one bald one and one decent one

Re: Convert posi to nonposi?

To convert to posi you need to find a posi carrier and gears to go with it. You can easily spend close to $1000 doing this when you factor in installation and everything if you use new parts. Used parts you can do it cheaper, but then you're spending a lot of money to install new parts. The point is it takes special tools and special skills to install new carrier and gears into a differential housing and you will have to pay a somewhat specialized mechanic several hundred just for labor unless you can get a fat hookup.

What IS easy is swapping entire rear axles. You can do this by yourself in the driveway in just a few hours. You shouldn't have too hard of a time looking around locally finding a rear axle out of a 4th gen Camaro Z28 or Trans Am. This is exactly what I did. Many of these cars came with 3.42 and 3.23 posi rear ends from the factory. Any 4th gen Camaro with a T56 6 speed has a 3.42 posi. With the exception of some emergency brake issues that you will have to figure out, the rear end from these cars is a direct bolt in. Expect to pay anywhere from $200 to $500 and don't pay more than that. Even $500 is pushing it. In addition to better gears and a posi, you will get disk brakes too.

Look for rear ends from an LS1 car, 98-02, but any car 82-02 will technically work.

A cheaper alternative would be to quit romping that bad boy .

Re: Convert posi to nonposi?

But since he's also tired of the 2.73:1 gear, an axle swap makes sense. It depends on what price he can get, to his door, as they say. Around here, 4th gen posi rears run no less than $1000, so I'd get a 3.42:1 non-posi from a '90-'92 V6/Auto camaro/bird, and do the conversion locker, which with shipping and lube would run $400 on a $75 rear. These V6s came with the 28-spline axles, the 7.625" ring gear, and haven't been abused.
