Is my tranny going out?
I have a 1992 t-5 out of a police car. I just put in a new 350 and a new clutch. The tranny is hard to get in and out of gear, except when it's not running! Sometimes when it is in gear, but the clutch is out the car will creep forward? How hard is it to rebuild one of these units? Could someone help me?

Do what's called the nine second spin test. 1 let the engine get up to operating temps with the tranny in neutral clutch engaged. 2 disengage the clutch. 3 wait 9 seconds then shift staright in to reverse. If the gears grind your disc is draging. Let me explain. idleing in gear turns the input shaft. Disengaging the clutch and waiting 9 seconds allows the input shaft to stop spinning. Reverse has no synchro on it so when you shift into it any clutch dragging is evident by grinding because the input shaft would have to be spinning for it to grind. That is why some people shift into 5th before reverse. 5th has a synchro on it which would make the input shaft stop spinning then they don't grind into reverse. I don't know why the car has to idle in gear. There is a reason but I forgot it. Just trust me. Basiclly your clutch is dragging.
