T5 just too weak, or can it be built tough?
can the T-5 be built to take horsepower from a V8? say 350HP
anyone do this to a T-5? How much did it cost and how hard was it? I hear rebuilding a manual is alot easier than rebuilding a automatic.
i ask because i dont want to have to switch transmissions(take out clutch pedal and switch consoles and all that shiat) if I dont have too if a T-5 will hold up(if worked over correctly).

The biggest problem with the T-5 is the case. Across the front, between the clutch gear and the countergear, there isn't enough metal to keep the gears in the right place; under high loads, especially shock, the case stretches and allows the gears to become misaligned, after which they wipe out quickly. After enough times of that the case stretches permanently. The early model T-5s would leak out the CG bearing because the hole in the case woud get so out of shape; I've even had them to where the front CGF bearing (supposedly a press-fit) would spin in the case, the fluid of course would always leak out, and running it dry would destroy it even faster.
There is a thing from www.gearzone.net that braces the rear CG bearing; I can't see how that has much effect on the strength, but that's just me. 350 HP isn't very much, but I tore up several T-5s with my OE 305, and it went downhill after I put a 400 in the car. Nowadays I have a WC one, and I don't speed shift, ever; I think the WC has the exact same weakness, so I have learned to be gentle. But still, the torque has definitely worn it out.

If you really want a 5 speed, dont bother with the T5 or the WC T5. Go striaght for the Tremec TKO.I have the WC in my car,and it is dying,i dont powershift when im spraying, but the tranny just isnt holding up.

The regular T5 was available in 83-87 Thirdgens. The World Class T5 was in 88-92 Thirdgens. The World Class is stronger than the regular version. You can identify the World Class version by the Timkin bearing on the front of the trans. Its a large circle about 3" in diameter, with the word TIMKIN printed on the circumference. Part of the circle is covered by the input shaft cover. You can use gear oil in a regular T5, but only use ATF in a World Class T5.
