My 700r4 curse, no 3rd gear @ WOT
Grrr. It's taken me a bit to post this, but while doing some high speed messing around on the highway, i became aware that i was not shifting into third @ WOT all the time, even if i let it wind up near 6k (it normally shifts @ 5100ish)
My old 85 Z used to have that problem occasionally as well, but only if i was manually shifting. I attributed it to the cheap BM shift kit that the previous owner had installed, since many others with that shift kit would also pop up with the same problem from time to time.
But in my 92Z28 that definitely doesn't have a shift kit and i never manually shift it. I don't get it. Why don't 700s shift into third for me @ WOT. My only thought is this. I had adjusted my TV cable and believe it stayed a click too tight. I have since readjusted it and it's a little looser now, but i haven't top ended it yet to find out if it fixes the shift problem. Other than that, my tranny fluid is showing age, perhaps a boogie is stuck somewhere in the valvebody. I'm planning on changing that soon too.
Besides that, does anybody else have any ideas?

My "original" '86 700r4 didn't complete the 2-3 shift at WOT, either. It would redline in 2nd until I let off the gas, at which point it'd shift into 3rd. No amount of playing with the TV cable or fluid level fixed it.
After that trans died (due to the '86 700r4's bad pump design) and was rebuilt, I got my 2-3 WOT shift.
It might be just age & worn-out clutches.

Your 3-4 clutch pack is almost burned up. This was a design flaw because GM didn´t put enough clutches in the 3-4 pack and that was a weak point. That is why a good rebuilder will stick more clutches in the 3-4 pack (8-9 instead of 5-6 like they came stock.)

Don't be so sure that it's the 3-4 clutch pack. I have a rebuilt 700R4 with 2500 miles on it, with a Trans Go shiftkit. I had this problem before the rebuild, and I have this problem now. I'm almost 100% sure that's it's my TV cable at fault. It doesn't tighten enough because it has a kink in it.

your problem is more then likely in your valve body, have it rebuilt by someone who really knows what they are doing with a 700R4 I could explain the whole thing but I dont have the time at the moment

Could the 3-4 clutch pack be my problem? Mine sometimes freewheels when it is supposed to shift into third. Mainly the 2-3 shift, but also once or twice on the 4-3 downshift. I plan to build a new one soon, but I would like to know what migh tbe wrong now!

I had the same problem, and it followed me to a new trans....it turned out to be the governer. Put a governer in that has a little heavier weights on the "flappers" ...it'll cure that problem every time. This will make it shift sooner...They are easy to change even with the trans installed, so you can try different ones until you get the one you like. Personally, mine will shift into 3rd at 4900 (street), right where I like it for the street. When racing, I always manual shift from 2nd, and let the trans do the 1-2 shift (about 5000). I find that 3rd can come too soon, so I hold it till 4950 or so and get better 1/4 mile times. That is much better than "hanging" out there at redline waiting for the trans to shift.

is that why my tranny won't shift into 3rd @ wot and shifts @ 5000 from 1st to 2nd. the 700's casing is that of a '88 tbi s10. i'm guessing the engine makes less power, and @ lower rpms, and thus equalling a lower redline????
