Bad whine from rear-end

I've got a really bad whining noise coming from the axle. I can hear it on the highway when I have the windows down, and in the car as well. Goes away when I slow down.

Bad bearings or are the gears shot? Or will it be cheaper to replace the whole axle from one in a yard ($45)?. Already checked the oil and it's topped off, so that's not it.

Are you sure it's not the tranny. I know you probably checked that, but it was worth my typing. Good luck.
