12 Bolt Rear on a thirdgen from a truck?

It's a 12bolt that was on a truck, the guy got it from a junk yard, so i don't know what it originally goes to. It has 3.08's now and i -think- he said a open rear and drums... for $150, i going to go look at it sometime next week.
Couple of questions, will my disk brakes work on it? How much would it cost to put posi and 3.73? Where do i get the gear for my speed-o? (cable driven?) good investment? I want to get it so i have something for the stroker motor i'm planning..

-K&N Airfilters
-Ported Plenum
-2.77 Gears (not much to brag about but eh, its there)
-MSD 8.5 mm plug wires
-Problems every other day with the car (probably not a mod, but to me it sure makes a difference)

I am pretty sure it won't bolt up because the shock mounts are in different places. I cannot say if it is the right length or not either. As for tranny gear for the speedo... check the equations page on the main page.

I believe (but could be wrong) that 10-bolt brakes and posi units will not fit in there right, check Jegs or Summit for posi differentials and gears for their prices. It really isn't that hard to do...

If your going to do that swap your looking at alot of money and time. You have to weld spring perches on the rear end for the coil springs to set in, weld brackets on to hook up the LCA's, weld brackets on for the torque arm and move the shock brackets. The gears will cost you a $150, $200-$300 to have them setup and another $300-$400 for a good posi. I'm npt sure about the width of the rear end, if it will work under a third gen or not.

It won't work because of all the fabrication involved. It's also too wide.

The hardest part about installing all the mounting hardware is figuring out how to mount the torque arm.

I'd say walk away from the "deal". A truck 12 bolt isn't the same as a car 12 bolt. They use different ring and pinions.

In that case, what kinda rear end would you all say to use? any good ones (i gotta have my posi, it's been my best friend in some hard times traction wise)

89... do you have a 10-bolt? If so, then you also have the 28-spline axles and you could just get a SLP posi for about $99 and get the 3.73 gears too. Also, go with a rear end girdle for about $135 from Summit or SLP (I think they sell them too). If you can, get the axle tubes welded to the housing and it is about as strong as a 10-bolt can be. Look up Dan Burke's article in the tech articles section.

You can get a 12-bolt or a Ford 9" for 3rd gens from Strange or Moser I believe. They run about $2K and are direct fits. Those are the strongest.

A BW 9-bolt is pretty damn strong too, but parts are $$$ and rare to find sometimes.
