How to tell if my 700r4 is pre '86 or 87 and later?

I just got a free 700r4 tranny from my sister's friend. He said it came out of an 87 iroc but who knows. How can I tell if it's a pre 1986 or 1987 and later version? The front pump # is 8654303 and the pass. side rear stamped # is 5YP064C. Is there a tranny decoder somewhere that will tell me what this tranny came out of? Thanks.

Drop the pan and see if it has a metal tube running from the valve body. Cant remember where it runs to.

Can someone help me decode the #'s on this tranny or point me to where I can find out? Thanks.

The early 700's had 27 spline input shafts. The later ones had 31(I think)

It is a 1985 unit. Get a 1988 an up to start with. Dana

Can anypart of this trans be spared? Is the case the same as the 1988 and up models? Should I just throw it in the trash? Is your last name Sniff?

Keep it around for spare parts. The 1987 and up cases are different in the valve body area, and have a tube that goes from the front pump to the forward accumulator (auxiliary valve body), that the early ones did not have. My last name is Wilkes (Welsh origin). Dana
