T56-6 speed; electric reverse lockout
I just completed the swap of a Borg Warner aftermarket T56-6 speed into a '91 Z28. (It mounted perfectly thanks to the Spohn crossmember/torque arm set-up.) My question is: Will I damage the transmission if I don't hook up a momentary switch to activate the reverse lockout solenoid? It is easy to shift from Neutral to Reverse by overriding the lockout feature because the lockout assembly is spring-loaded and easy to overcome. (It takes very little effort to shift into reverse.) Installation instructions say that "if it is not desired to enable the solenoid" you can just overpower the spring but I can't tell if that's just for ocasional emergency use or OK on a regular ongoing basis. Help.

On my T56 It's hard to just shove the shifter in reverse and over power the solenoid, maybe it's because of the the short shifter, I dont know.
One thing to think about is to just wire the the reverse lockout into the brake switch.

Get one of those B&M t-handle shifters with the red button (normally used for NOS switch) for your thumb. Then wire the reverse lockout sylinoid to it. The whole point of the lockout sylinoid is to prevent accidental shifting into reverse at highway speeds.

You will be fine by just over riding the RLS, I do have the switch hooked up, but I seldomly use it. I have gone months without using the activated solenoid. You will be fine. If you do get the SHORT STICK, the switch is a GOOD IDEA . HTH's

Hey Rich that is probably why myine is so hard to shift into reverse, because of the short throw shifter. If I had tried the stock one I may have found it would be easier to overpower it. Did you get the pressure plate balanced? Oh and to anyone else who reads this 2 thumbs up to Steve Spohn for borrowing my trans and making the crossmember!
