t-5 questions??? help me out..

ok guys heres a few questions , i hope someone can answer for me, 1. what year did they first put a 5spd in a thirdgen. 2. what fluid type is reccomended for the 5spd, my manual says that it takes dexron 2 but my 87 had gear oil in it when i got it (used of course) and i just bought a junk yard 5 spd that has gear oil in it. also the tranny i just bought has 84z written on it, but it is definitely a borg warner 5spd, im guessing that someone at the wrecking yard was wrong, now my final question is did they make any other different BW 5spds other than the t-5 and the WC t-5?.
well thanks in advance. all info is greatly appreciated.

also will using gear oil when it says to use dexron 2 hurt anything? because i am thinking that maybe when i switched mine back to dexron when it had gear oil in it may be the reason it failed, (synchro`s are bad) should i just keep gear oil in the one i just got? or would that be bad? thanks.

Well, I'm no expert on this, but I do think that all the books call for ATF in the T-5. I had never heard of that, so asked the guys who rebuilt mine when I got the car. They said that they would go half ATF and half gear oil or to go with strait gear oil. I felt safer with the 90 weight oil, so I put in strait gear oil. I can't say if that was the right choice or not, but it hasn't given me any problems. Shifter feels a little stiff on cold mornings though.

as for first year... 83 comes to mind for some reason. I think 83 was the first year for a five speed and 84 was the first for a hydraulic clutch. might want to double check that though.

Mike S is correct on the years. 83-87 used the regular T5, and 88-92 used the World Class T5. The first year for TPI with a T5 is 87. Regular T5's use gear oil, while WC T5's use ATF only. They have different synchros in them that will burn up with regular gear oil. There are a couple T5 replacements, one is the Tremec, the other is the Richmond. You can also put in a T56 from a 93-97 4th gen.

I just installed a t-5 from an 86 T/A in my 82T/A. Big sticker on the side "Use Dexron-II" Does this mean that it is a world class from a later year? Or were there maybe some non-WC t-5s that used atf?

Also, wanted to confirm what mike2 said about 84 was first year for the hydraulic clutch. Pretty sure on 83 being first year for t-5 also.

Use synthetic ATF in all of them. The bearing clearances etc are designed for it.
84 Z's came with T-5's. I have read on this board that 82's came with either a BW T10 or a saginaw, but i have never seen one in person. The T-5 is the only thirdgen 5 speed that i have ever heard of. The V8 and V6 T-5's are different, but the cases are supposed to be the same. It was offered from 83-92 with the hydraulic clutch coming out in 84 (as stated). I suggest checing the pre-load on your input shaft bearing before you install the trans, it is easy and really makes a big difference in performance and durability. I check/shim mine about every 25-30K
