Something's just not right....

I just payed $900 to get my transmission rebuilt. asked them specifically to put in a Trans-Go high performance shift kit. they said they would. I finally got the car back after a week of waiting, and it's slower than when i gave it to them. I used to be able to have a chance at beating a stock 5.0 mustang. now i couldn't beat a 1985 escort! The tires break loose, but it shifts at 2,500 rpm. I'm not understanding what they did wrong. I want to know so when I call them, I can rip their heads off and know what I'm talking about.

The TV cable sounds like it's out of adjustment.... I'd look into that before taking it to the tranny shop.

Already checked that cable. moved it and it did squat. The RPM's are just totally f**ked.

I agree with MrJ. Have the TV cable adjustment checked first.

Did they play with the governor? I've heard of it "sticking", and people needing to clean it, but nobody every described how they knew it was sticking, or how they cleaned it.

Is the car fast up to 2500 rpm?

I'm not sure what they did to my car. It's worse though. Everytime I step on it a little more than usual it reeks like something is burning. I'm going to take it back and tell the guy who did it to drive it. Tell him that if he doesn't give me my money back i'm gonna shove my 3' heel up his a$$. Anyone know a good transmission shop in illinois??
Thanks for your help by the way

Car: 1999 Chevy Cavalier
Engine: 2.2
Transmission: 5 speed
Axle/Gears: it's part of the transmission
that sucks!!I heard they don't have good consumer protection laws in Illinois, but F#CK them!! it sounds like whoever did it just didn't give a $h!t,my standards might be high because my auoto was done by the best(FNA,Wakfield,MA for those who live there) still works too.next tranny is going to be a T56,I know the conversion is hard but autos $uck.go to small claims court and have your T. rebuilt somewhere else, what a bunch of geeks, they wasted your shift kit!! I wish I could go up there and take care of their shop with my marksman delux hunting slingshot and a bag of fresh raddishes(good for windows). If the customers finished cars aren't fenced in,I would buy cases of ATF and leave puddles under thier cars.
I know it's cold out and only the most hard core racers are out,but you need to talk to people on the street and find out were the "real" transmission shops are!! don't give up your fight for justice,my sister brought her car in for an oil change at PEP-BOYS salem,NH,they broke her oil pan and blatenly told her to have it towed out of their lot with out refunding her,I was going to wait until I went home for leave and beat the F*CK out of the manager I made some threatening phone calls, but to my relief she called her insurance co. and they made a legal settlment for her.she had it fixed at a BMW specialist, parts & labor cost were probably a good lesson for those guys to stop doing novice work and taking advantage of women.

The shop did a poor rebuild of your transmission. I've been there. I had my TH200-4R rebuilt and it was a real dog afterwards. A week later, I took it back and made them put in a ready-to-go remanufactured unit. Everything is fine now.

I think a lot of the problem comes from not being able to bench-test a shop-rebuilt unit. I don't think they have the machines to put it up on and run it. That's where the Guinea Pig customer comes in. Take your back (if it's still under warranty) and tell them you want a ready-to-go remanufactured unit. One that had to have been bench-tested before being shipped out.

Going through 3 automoatic trannies (700R-4s) from a local rebuild shop, I feel your pain. They are dicks too (Transmission Exchange in Great Bend, KS) I ended up rebuilding one myself, but killed it too when I hit a HUGE dip at like 80 mph, and ripped one of the cooler lines out, draining the tranny...then running it dry...I now have a T56 and am VERY happy with the results.

I feel your pain too, my father (being a mechanic) raised me with a few simple concepts, look both ways before crossing the street, and never ever trust transmission people...Since then, I can honestly say that I know a few people that work on trannys and in all honesty there not bad people, just weird...I guess its all in the method to their maddness...Im sure you got a warrenty with your rebuild, so use it to your advantage, simple things like looking at your car everyday and hearing your complaints can often sway the way a service dept handles themselves..It just sucks that after laying out all that cash that your new hang out would be a tranny shop...
Be patient and see what happens, then tell them you and your closest friends know where they live, then throw in that your boyfriend gets out of prison on the 3rd...Again these simple comments often sway day to day policy... Good luck and let us know how you make out..

Not one penny to exchange that rebuilt dog for an AAMCO reman unit! I'll give credit where's credit's due. It was at an AAMCO shop in the north part of Atlanta. All I lost was some time.

I think another reason transmission mechanics will pawn off an untested rebuild is that they HAVE to do a shop rebuild every so often to maintain their certification.

Which sucks because SOMEBODY gets to be the victim. If a shop has a proper bench-testing unit to put a tranny up on and run it, that would be O.K. Otherwise, YOUR car is the bench unit!
