Non-thirdgen, but: What tranny came in a 66 Buick?
Does anyone know what tranny came in a 1966 Buick Skylark? I think it is a 3-speed. Will it bolt up to a 350?

It should be a Turbo 400. It will not bolt up to a Chevrolet 350, though it will bolt to a Buick, Pontiac, or Olds 350.

A TH400... Those should be pretty strong then. Is a re-build the same as for a Chevy even though the houseing is different?

Here's food for thought. Try to find a 1966 Buick Electra or Cadillac. They had TH400 but they also had switch-pitch torque converters! I had one on my 1966 Cadillac Coupe DeVille and it was the coolest gizmo. At a stop-light, it would shift to high-stall speed and the car would creep very little. Normal driving would cause the stator to shift to low stall speed for efficiency. When floored or for passing, the tranny would not downshift, but the stator would shift to high stall speed and give a much smoother and better acceleration. It worked great on that Caddy and I never had any problem! I can only guess that GM discontinued it was such an expensive feature.

If the transmission is the original one that came with the car it is a TH300 Varible Pitch (Switch Pitch). It is a 2-speed unit. It is similar to a Power Glide, but much stronger & better shifting than the stock Power Glide. Gear ratios are 1.76 (first), & 1.00-1 (high gear). Have built many Varible Pitch transmissions over the years, parts are very rare now but still can be found if not in a rush. If you have any questions call me at 800 7762388 Mon-Sat 10-6 PST & I will be glad too help!!!

3-speed Switch-Pitch trannies can be found in the Cadillacs, Buick Electras, and Olds 98s of that era, if you don't want the 2-speed. I don't know the name of the transmission. I just know my 1966 Coupe DeVille had a 3-spd Switch-Pitch.
