Re: Will someone help me build my rear end!

Old saying: If you have to ask the cost, you can not afford it.

The cost of Parts & labor (may vary with your location) $700/800 should be a ball park number.

If it isn't broke leave it alone.

Re: Will someone help me build my rear end!

- Ring and pinion set
- 7.5" 10-bolt rebuild kit (all seals, shims, bearings, etc)
- Posi carrier (3 series) for either 26 or 28 spline axles (1990+ had 28 I beleive, yours could be either being a 1990)
- Gear oil and limitted slip additive (get the GM stuff, unless theres a mfg recommendation from whoever makes the posi you buy)

air is right, except the cost of that carrier will be the same for a 3.73 rear end you could get out of a junkyard from the same car as yours which might need a low cost rebuild

Re: Will someone help me build my rear end!

the carrier is the housing that has the actual gears inside... since the gears are different in size, the carrier is as well... usually a carrier with 2.08's for example can be upgraded to maybe a 2.73 or 3.08 but once you get to numerically "higher" gears such as 3.23's to 4.10's you need a bigger carrier to change the gears inside. so in this case, 3.73 gears cannot be put into a 2.73 carrier per say. and the fact its locking and you want posi... two different carriers all together.

The carrier is not the axle housing, the carrier is the technical term for the posi unit/differential (the part the ring gear bolts onto). The carrier is different from 2.72 and 3.73 rear ends. The axle housing itself is the same for 2.73 and 3.73 rear ends.

Just very confusing the way you worded it... the way your posts read, it sounds like you have 'carrier' and 'housing' confused. I'm not saying you don't know what you are talking about, its just very confusing the way you wrote your post. I just wanted to clarify.

Anyway, back to Goodlookin's question.... Yes, a good quality, name brand posi unit is usually in the $400-500 range. Best place to look is Summit if you want a new unit.

Since this is going into a factory 10-bolt though, I would recommend checking Ebay or www.camaroz28.com or other 4thgen boards, and look for a Zexel/Torsen unit out of a '98+ Camaro for Firebird with the LS1. They are a very good unit, and since they are a clutchless design, they don't really wear out like a traditional Posi unit will. It would be considerably cheaper than buying a new $500 posi as well.

Re: Will someone help me build my rear end!

Alright dude, I am in the process of rebuilding my 7.5 for an 86. Along with the ring and pinion and carrier you will need a pinion depth tool, a dial indicator and stand, and an installation kit. This kit has all the shims for setting up pinion depth and backlash as well as new bearings for the carrier and pinion, the pinion seal, crush sleeve, and ring gear bolts. These are left hand thread bolts so when you go to remove and reinstall, they don't follow the "lefty loosie, right tighty" rule. Do you have access to a press? Your going to have to use it for the pinion bearings and carrier bearings. Since your switching from a 2-series carrier to a 3-series, you'll most likely have to use a pinion depth tool in order to set that right. Otherwise you could just use the old shim from the old pinion. This link has some pictures and some pretty good info. Link

PM me if you need more...

This was the first thing that I ever did on a car. However, it takes a lot of time, money, and skill to swap gears, add posi, and set everything up. I went the easier route since I didn't have much mechanical knowledge at the time. I just found a complete rear end that had the posi & gears I wanted and bought that. It took about 2-3hrs the first time to remove the old rear end and install the new one. With your budget, you shouldn't need to spend more than half of what you have. Btw, I have done both methods and prefer to swap the whole rear end.

Re: Will someone help me build my rear end!

i just bought a 12 bolt completely built for $700. if you look hard enough you can find a rear end cheaply. however if you need parts i have a series 3 borg warner carrier with 3.73 gears for a ten bolt. will let it go cheaply, because i know what its like to have a small budget to work off of.

it a 12 bolt out of a truck that was built by bmr racing in new york, and to be honest i was suprised by the quality of the work, perfect. they did a really good job on it. a body guy in new york used it for two seasons and decided to go with a 9 inch

GoodlookinRS I just have the 10 bolt rear end.

i was saying that i had a series three posi unit with 3.73 gears for a ten bolt up for grabs. you said that you were looking for a 3.73 gear and a posi unit for a ten bolt, and i have both. let me know if your interested

ok well in that case that 700 dollars u just spent was a waste....wow that sucks.

well unless u are either running a totally diferent rear end suspension set up, or its been modified to work in an third gen fbody...i.e. TORQUE ARM MOUNT, and set up for coils springs or coil overs....ive only seen that done like once or twice and i just dont know how strong that torque arem mount really could be....

built by bmr racing for thr f body car with torque arm mounts, + every other bracket needed to put into a third gen and be able to use my stock disk brakes, i am sorry for leaving that out

Kevin, i put the gears in the car and only put maybe 50 miles on the gears, before i spun a **** load of bearings, car hasn't moved in two years. so idk like 130 + shipping, and i will throw in the axels as well because i want to make sure that it will go together for you okay. depending on how far of a drive it is for you, if you want to take a road trip, i will give you the whole 10 bolt for the same price, that way you dont have to worry about seting it up. let me know

Re: Will someone help me build my rear end!

i blew up the motor, the rear end is fine, i am not sure how many splines a series 2 carrier is and that is why i would give you the axles with it so there is no confusion, and i think that if it isnt to far of a drive, picking up the whole rearend may be some thing you want to consider. all that you would have to do is mount your brakes, and put it into your car, saving you the headache of having to set the gears up, shimming every thing, check pinion depth and end play and all of the other **** that is a pain in the *** in setting up the rear end. however it is your choice.

Re: Will someone help me build my rear end!

not sure, should be in the 630 range at the fly wheel on a 175 shot
if i dont see a 10.50 or better than im not spraying enough motor should hold up to a 275 shot safely.

axles, c-clips, ring and pinion, carrier yoke, pinion nut
and any other internal part that i am forgeting, i will take every thing out of the housing and ship it, cuz it wont do me any good, i would recomend that you buy the master rebuild kit, its like 90 bucks or cheaper, that would give you all of the 10 bolt housing seals, and shims, it would also include new bearings for the pinion and carrier, i think they also come with a new pinion nut, and they also have a cover gasket. that way when you are ready to set it up you wont be looking for bearings and other mic. parts at the last minute. the bearings look pretty good, with minor wear marks, but if your going to set it up do it right and replace the bearings and seals. also get marking compound so that you can check the wear pattern and make sure that it is set up where it should be. ill check shipping prices tomorrow. it shouldn't be more than 20 or 30 bucks
