Lock up and brake switch

Is there a way to put a toggle switch in the brake switch wiring? My converter locks up on the 1-2 shift and stays locked up. I want to put a toggle inline to trick the car in thinking that the brakes are applied. Mechanic said theres no pressure switches in the valve body. 1986 iroc 305 tpi

Re: Lock up and brake switch

turning on the brake light bulbs will in no way affect the trans

you cant use one of the manual lockup kits that allows you to control the lockup?

Re: Lock up and brake switch

lock up should not occur in 1st or 2nd. if it is you have some other problem. be sure you have all the gears. lockup may occur in 3rd (depending on your setup) and in 4th. to test your lock up get a steady cruising speed and just touch the brakes. if the rpms drop a couple hundred then you had lock up. if you are getting lock up in 2nd i would try to fix the problem rather than fool the trans.

eh, 5 dollar switch or dropping the tranny pan again, which would you prefer? haha i just want it to kick out of lock up when im going up a hill, the shift kit did away with the half throttle 4-3 kickdown.

Re: Lock up and brake switch

You can order a kit from Bowtie Overdrives for $35 that will allow you to disengage the lockup when you hit the brakes

Re: Lock up and brake switch

I think mine was a purple wire on the brake light switch I tapped into with a toggle switch.

Re: Lock up and brake switch

Just for the sake of the knowledge, could someone explain to me whats going on here? Is Luthers car malfunctioning, or will this benefit him in some way? I would assume the TCC locking up (under hard acceleration) would be good. Is he just trying to stop if from locking up during normal acceleration? Is that the malfunction?

Re: Lock up and brake switch

Hi All,

I have exactly the same problem on my 85 trans-am tranny , the LG4 engine is gone with it's ECM and now car is running with old school carb and I needed to wire the lock-up so found that thread , http://www.clubhotrod.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26644
and having still the lock-up wiring coming from the tranny , I've hooked the purple wire to the brake switch and put together the blue et and tan/black but tranny now locks in all gears... Even tried to ground the tan/black and purple to brake switch and still the same thing , any idea??
Thanks lot
