425HP into a 700R4
Will a basicly stock 700R4 w/shiftkit take 425HP/460 ft.lbs that the ZZ383 puts out?

Re: 425HP into a 700R4
for a while yea.......
I abused mine quite a bit, and depending on how often you drive, it changes "personality" every fill up. Was about 300 kms for me.
By the end of it, it was slipping like crazy, starting to leak, and missing shifts.
The tranny guy i spoke to said, the biggest factor for an auto trans surviving behind a big power motor, is the stall converter.
My torque converter was stock, which he said has an effective stall rating of about 900rpm...... Basically its very tight, and allows for very little slip. What this means is, that almost 100% of the power is being transmitted through the transmission at all time while in gear. Which is very stressful on the parts. This meant, i couldnt brake to a complete stop while in gear, and i had to fight very hard with the brakes to keep the rear wheels from spinning, if they werent warm.
You want slip in the torque conveter, to allow some relief to the trans, and you want an agressive shift kit to reduce slip inside the trans. A trans cooler would probably help too.

This is going to be a weekend car only.
It will also be getting a 2200rpm stall converter, i was told to go 3000 but i think it is abit to crazy for a street car.

I have about 400hp and a 2100 "high" stall and my tranny, which had about 5000 miles on it, went out on the way back to the shop from the dyno. These trannys are meant to withstand maybe 300 hp and thats about it.

Re: 425HP into a 700R4
What shift kit do you have in it?
If you hav e 3000 stall, you should be ok. But if you are going to be agressive with it, count on it breaking eventually.
ie: burnouts, drag racing, transbraking, etc...
Also with a 3000 stall, if u havent gotten it yet, might be worth while getting a lockup converter.
I wouldnt worry about it with what youve described.

Re: 425HP into a 700R4
Before I put my stroker in, I was making 340 horse with a stock 700r4 with a shift kit. And worked perfectly. With your combo I would highly recommend looking up probuilt and buying there street rebuilt kit. I have it in my car and shifts perfectly. I also have a 2900 lockup converter, and a external trans cooler. This works great on the street, and really launches hard at the strip. Any questions just let me know, I went through the same thing that you did.

Re: 425HP into a 700R4
my old 83 Z28 had about 420hp and 400tq on engine and a 2 stage nitrous 150/200 jets. I went through 3 700r4 in less than a year and I had a 2800 stall and a twisted chasis to prove the hard launches but they do not hold up to the stress and 3rd was always first to go and they like to slip even with a shift kit and 2800 stall converter. I swaped a built th350 and 4.11 gears in a 12 bolt then upped the stages to 200/250 jets and I was pulling low 10's on 245 h grade tires.
