Rear end Whining/Squealing noise
I have a 1991 trans am GTA.
L98-700R4 with the stock limited slip rear and stock 3.23 gears
So I have been noticing that my rear end has been making a very noticeable squeal when I let off the throttle. The car wont make any noise until i hit just under 40mph, then I let off and it whines pretty bad. And more recently I have been hearing a more constant whine just by driving over 40mph (so its getting worse i assume).
At first I thought it was the backlash but now that when i go over 40 it has a slight whine even on throttle. Could it be the bearings?
All help will be appreciated, and if you make a suggestion on what is wrong, an explanation of how to fix it would be great. And if you think i could do it in my garage with some automotive experience, plenty of tools, and jacks.
If not, I can always bring it to my Automotive Vocational shop where i am a student with lifts and all that jazz but id rather do it at home so i dont have to hassle my auto teachers with another car occupying one of our bays.

if you think the noise is coming from the rear i would inspect all the bearings plus the gears. if something is coming apart it may have got into another component. look everything over good and replace damaged parts this way you won't be doing this twice. also inspect the u-joints while your at it.

billymac49 really gave the best plan of action for you if the noise is coming from the rear end. I would suggest starting with the easiest (U-joints) and work back to the rear end. You don't have to rip the whole rear end apart just pop that back cover off and do a visual inspection.
This can be done in a garage on jackstands, but if I had access to a lift I would rather use it than working on the ground.
