700R4/2.73's in a TPI suck less, but still kinda suck. The extra torque of the TPI motor doesn't need a lower gear as much as the other motors.

700R4/3.23's with a TPI are much more fun to drive, will get a little hard on tires if you are not careful. When I swapped mine, I quite enjoyed it. My city mileage actually improved, maybe .5 or so, but highway mileage dropped about 2 mpg.

Yes, I know it was an old post... I just felt like adding to it anyway.

So your saying that with my 505 TPI, 700r4, and the 3.73 gears I plan on putting in... it would be way to much tire spin for some 245/50/16 tires to handle?

!!? Where did you get a 505 TPI?

When I made a remark about tire life with the 3.23's, I did not mean uncontrollable wheelspin. A relatively tame 305 TPI with 3.23's will spin the tires when you want it to, but when you don't, the wheelspin is controllable. 3.73's will give another 15% torque multiplication vs. 3.23's, and will be more prone to wheelspin, but I would say 245/50/16 tires will still hold it, except for the times when you don't want it to do so.

Sorry about that. I meant to put 305... it's a funny typo though. Imagine all the torque... that would be one mean engine, LOL!

I like the fact that I would be able to start fires with the 3.73's, but would it be hard to handle in the rain?

Re: whats so bad about a 2:73 rearend

2.73's are not horribly bad but i would like to upgrade one day. my 2.73 10 bolt has been through some tough times with my setup. i have a zz 383 with a procharger and beat on the rear. the transmission doesnt have a problem it will hold a ton of power.

I was delivering pizzas back when I put the 3.23's in my car, so I got to do all kinds of driving in all kinds of weather, whether I wanted to or not.

You won't want to be anywhere near ice, of course that can be said, even with 2.73's and TBI. Rain wasn't any big deal, although the same time I went to 3.23's I also put in a torsen posi, so I increased my traction at the same time I improved my gears. I think, even with 3.73's, you will handle ok in rain. Maybe borderline if you have an open rear, but if you're changing gears anyway, it sounds like prime time to fix that, too.

Ice is not a problem for me... I don't drive my car in the winter.

If I got a 3.73 rear, I would definitely make sure I would have a posi. I wasn't really planning on putting new gears in my current rear. I was hoping to find one that was all setup so I just have to swap rear ends and I'm done.
