Rear end compatible? help quick please
Hello
I am replacing the rear end of my 1986 z28. I had found this whole disk break, posi, rear end am im just making sure its compatible. I know there are different ratios, and bolt numbers or something, but i have no idea what they mean.
This rear end came out of a 88 gta, it has disk breaks, and posi. It doesn't say the bolt number, but should it be compatible?
please reply, don't want to lose the offer.
THANKS!!!
-Andrew

Re: Rear end compatible? help quick please
well 9 bolt is a 7.75" ring gear and is the sstronger of the 2 rears offered in 3rd gens, but has zero aftermarket. 10 bolt is a 7.5" ring gear and is weaker but has a cheaper aftermarket. BTW these are the number of bolts on the rear cover. Yes all 82-02 F-body rear ends are a direct swap, with 4th gens being a tad wider.
Also the 88 brakes aren't the best they still use a single piston iron caliper.

82-92 rear axles should all be compatable. As far as the different bolt covers, check how many bolts hold on the rear axle cover and thats the number bolt axle you got. As far as gears you will need the speedo gear that goes into the back of the tranny that corrects the speedo to the gears outta the GTA. Other than the e-brake cables if your swapping from drum to disk, your all set. That should just about wrap it up. Other than that, there is a search provided above that will help you out with more specifics.

Ok so pretty much it is...
1. Look at how it is currently set up
2. pull the old out
3. bolt the new one in
What other steps are there?
Im not quite sure what you are talking about with the speedo config? sorry, im totally new to rear end configurations.
THANKS!!!

if your doing drum to disk your going to have to swap proportioning valve off the master cylinder. Switch e-brake cables. Change the speedo gear in i think the tail of the transmission, and other than that, swap out old axle with new setup.
----------
there is a tiny plastic gear in the tail shaft of the transmission that transfers the rotation of the transmission to a cable that controls your speedometer. That would need to be taken out of the transmission of the doner car so that you have the propper speedo gear for the gears of the new axle. Thats all, unscrew, take out old, put in new gear, and then screw the cable back in if i remember correctly.
