Rear End Differential Oil Change Question?

Car: 1987 Iroc-Z
Engine: 305 TPI LB9
Transmission: Borg Warner T-5 5 Speed
Axle/Gears: Borg Warner 9 Bolt 3.45 LS
Rear End Differential Oil Change Question?
I just drained out all the old fluid and put the cover back on. I decided to use the black prematex gasket maker. My question pertains to tightening the bolts. Should I follow the instructions on the back of the box that say to finger tighten, wait and hour, then 1/2 turn more? I don't think I should torque them all the way to 36 ft lbs...
When I took the cover off the bolts felt like they were about 15-20 ft lbs...
I just put the cover back on and snugged the bolts until the rtv slightly oozed out the side...
How do you guys normally do it (aside from using the correct gasket...)
I got the Mobil 1 75/90 and the LS additive as well...
Here is a pic of my cover and the tags that were on it...

36 ft-lbs sounds a bit excessive. But yeah, you're doing it the same way I do; except I only tighten them to 25ish ft-lbs, because of what size hardware they are. As far as I'm concerned, the "tubular style" gasket IS the correct one; always works fine for me. I don't see what good having a piece of paper in there along with it is going to do.
Although, that looks like it's a 9-bolt, by the gear ratio; and those have brass clutches, and don't really need the additive.

i'm running the lucas 75/90 with ls additive and it seems to be workin and according to All Data, 35 ft/lbs is the spec on those diff cover bolts

Thanks for the replies. I just waited the hour like it said and gave them about 1/3 a turn and they felt pretty solid...
Yes, this is the Borg Warner 9 bolt with the 3.45 gears, and supposedly limited slip (positraction?). Is there a way to tell for sure? All the searching I've done seems to suggest that most people tend to add the additive...
I'll keep searching though. I've been reading for days. Tons of useful info on this site. Thanks guys...

posi-trak is gm's name for limited slip. This same device, first available in Chrysler products was called "Sure Grip." The Ford edition was called "Traction-Lok." "Twin-Grip" was AMC's version.

Hey guys I have a question I was driving my 83 k5 blazer on the road and noticed it has a vibration noise in the back and it's been doing it worst and worst until yesterday I drove 30 min and pulled over noticed that my differental was squirting grease looking stinky oil throug he top . Never leaked before that's why I never questioned it was that, now I need to know is that how gear oil looks?it is a gray darkish grease looking ?and what would be the cause for this? Thanks hope you guys can help

Yea, you should have started a new thread.
Gear oil can be black if it's very old or contaminated, but it usually has a light brown or gold look. It should be a thick liquid. I'm guessing that you probably have a universal joint going bad.
