Beefing Up the 7.625 10 Bolt - Tech article

I saw this tech article in the tech article section. Has anyone done it? Is it the same, just as good as a 9 bolt?

https://www.thirdgen.org/beefinguprear

I'm looking at changing over to rear disc brakes, and strengthening my rear end while I'm at it, whether it be going to a 9 bolt or doing what this article says. Cost for doing either is no issue and makes no difference to me. I prefer quality.

Alot of us have done it.

Couldn't say about comparing it to a 9-bolt.

Mine, I have a 90-92 housing, with the axle tubes welded all the way around; LCARBs welded on; the whole thing powder-coated afterwards; PBR brakes of course; an Eaton posi (not a Gov-Lock, a real one); cap studs; crush sleeve eliminator; girdle cover; Superior EV10-4 axles; new yoke; new gears (just the stock highway ratio for the car, 3.73); synthetic fluid. I couldn't think of anything else to do to it. Hasn't broke yet, but then I haven't really worked it hard either. Since I did all the work myself except for the welding and powder-coating, I probably have about $900-1000 in it besides the cost of the core; out of which $450 was the posi.

Back when I was using a 10 bolt, I did all those modifications. Although it adds some strength, the diff still has a tiny ring and pinion and to do all those modifications including buying new aftermarket 28 spline axles, you can have a $800-$1000+ bill.

I did get my 10 bolt into the low to mid 11 second range before finally switching to a 9" for better gear choices and I installed a transmission with a transbrake at the same time.

My car originally had a 9 bolt with 3.27 gears and I got that down into the very high 11's at 117 mph with no modifications before switching to a 10 bolt.

I've done almost all what sofa has mentioned.
Haven't broken it yet. Then again, my car will probably never see south of a 12.5 ET.

bottom line? If you're gonna do everything at once, don't waste your money. If you're gonna do it piece at a time and not go faster than bottom 11's, go for it.

There are a few guys that have gone high 10's on their beefed 7.5/7.625 10-bolts. No matter what you do, the biggest issue remains. The ring gear is too small, thus a smaller pinion is required to achieve a lower ratio. The smaller gears have less contact area, thus are more prone to flex/break. - If you want it to live at all, don't go lower(numerically higher) than a 3.73 gear.

If you're gonna do it all at once, the money would be better spent on a 12-bolt, S60 or 9" conversion.
