Re: 12 bolt rear end question?????
Same as any other GM differential. A c-clip inside the carrier.
The axles are slid all the way in. The c-clip is installed then the axle is pulled back out until the c-clip bottoms out inside the carrier. After both axles are installed, the cross pin inside the carrier is installed to keep the axles from sliding back in allowing the c-clip to fall out.
The only thing holding the axle in is the c-clip. If an axle or the flange at the c-clip breaks, the axle and wheel can come out of the tube. That's why faster cars are required to have some sort of axle retention device. C-clip eliminators attach a flange mount around a bearing at the wheel end of the axle. If the c-clip or axle breaks, the bearing still holds everything in place. It's like a Ford 9" type system.

Re: 12 bolt rear end question?????
The Strange 12 bolt in my 88 GTA uses bolt in axles, same as the factory 9 bolt. I think that Moser and any other brand F-body 12 bolt also uses bolt in axles.
Chevrolet usually used c-clips. Buick, Olds, and Pontiac usually used bolt in axles.

We got a 12 bolt moser for my 1991 GTA Trans Am. And we were looking and wondering what the hell held in these axles. Do any of you have a 12 bolt Moser.

Re: 12 bolt rear end question?????
If you go to Mosers site they say that it can have either c-clips or bolt in axles. It depends on if it has 30 or 33 spline axles.
Pull off the back cover and look into the center of the carrier where the axles fit. You'll see c-clips if it has them.
Otherwise call Moser and see if they stamp an I.D. number on the housing that may help them tell you what it was built with.

Re: 12 bolt rear end question?????
Nope. After 72 it got easier but before that not so much.
12 bolt car is different than 12 bolt truck.
70 and earlier Olds had a 12 bolt cover with 10 bolt guts that are specific to that rear end.
I have a 72 Olds 10 bolt that has bolt in axles and uses standard 8.5" carrier/gears in my 71 Chevelle.
I also have a 73 Chevrolet 10 bolt with c-clips and standard 8.5" carrier/gears in my 73 Camaro.
I had a 65 Olds 8.2" 10 bolt that used different gears/carrier than the Chevrolet 8.2".
These are just examples I personally have experience with. Even in the 9 bolt there is different pinion bearings from Chevrolet to Pontiac. Look up Ratech bearing kits for it.
