New posi rear for new 350
Alright. So i just got my car back from swapping a 350 into it to get rid of the TBI 305. It's an 88 sport coupe, open differential, 3.08 gears. I've located a 10 bolt posi rear with 3.83 gears out of a Chevelle for 600 bucks. Before I even talk to the guy about it I figured I'd ask you guys if there will be any difference in strength of that rear as opposed to the one already in my car. Putting more traction to the road means a greater likelihood of things breaking, so I don't wanna put in a rear thats no stronger than the one I already have. Any advice on the topic is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: New posi rear for new 350
Doesn't really matter .... a Chevelle rear won't fit these cars.
Apart from that, there have been 3 10-bolts used in Chevelles over the years; the 8.2" up until about 72, and the 8.5" from then up until they started using the 7.5" like our cars have in about 78. The 8.2" is a POS, it's the one that gave the 10-bolt a bad name originally. The 8.5" is fairly heavy-duty, but still has weak axles, as people who put real high ratio gears and tall tires in their trucks can tell you. The 7.5" that's the same model as what's in our cars is .... the same as what's in our cars. Except of course, it doesn't fit.
The only chassis you can get a rear out of that will fit one of these cars, is one of these cars; 82-02. 93-02 ones are about 1¾" longer on each side though.

Do you have any recommendations on what would be a good, strong posi rear for me to look at?

Re: New posi rear for new 350
How much power are you making?
You just have to look at posi rears that are out of Camaros. You are most likely to find one from a 4th gen, 93-02. You will have to figure out a way to make the E-brake work, but it can be done. You should pay $200 - $400 for the whole rear, disk to disk. Depending on the year of you car you may have to get a prop valve for the rear disks to work right. You have an 88 so I'm not sure about this. They will be a bit wider but it doesn't look too bad. Most people wont even notice. I did it on my car and I can show you pics.

Re: New posi rear for new 350
I just bought a new 4th gen rear for my car as I found the cones in mine were shot and impossible to get just cones and since the whole car is tore apart for the winter. Now would be the perfect time to find out what was wrong. The rear is a little longer, cost me $350 and it included everything from the rotor to rotor. Also included PBR calipers and a eaton POSI Rear end with newly rebuild clutches and ebrake cables. Shouldn't be too hard to bolt in a go.

Re: New posi rear for new 350
well at the moment I'm probably only making around 250 horsepower, but I have big plans for this motor in the future (heads, intake, cam, boring, stroking) so i wanna get the rest of my drivetrain up to snuff before I do anything too radical to the engine. Darkshot, I would definitely like to see a few pics of your car with the 4th gen rear. Thanks

Since I already have the rear end, I would like to see the rear on the car also.

Re: New posi rear for new 350
These 10 bolts are notoriously weak. 250 hp is no big deal but when you start talking up around 350 - 400+ horsepower is when people seem to start breaking them. Traction is the enemy so if you don't run slicks you are much less likely to break the rear end. Automatics are also a lot easier on the rear end because you don't have the instant shock that you get with a clutch dump.

Re: New posi rear for new 350
if you plan to make power moser makes a bolt up 12 bolt rear w/ disc brakes. its a little pricey, about $600 to $1700 i believe.
