Interesting flywheel size issue

Interesting flywheel size issue
I bought an 87 camaro that was origonally a v6 but he had it set up for a sbc. Transmission and rearend came out of a 85 z28. When I went to put the flywheel on my engine today, it was a 3 inch center hole vs pre 86 3.6 inch or whatever it is. Its also 12 1/2 inches vs 14 1/4 and my clutch is 10 1/2 I beleive.
So my questions are, if I go and buy a pre 86 14 inch flywheel, will my clutch and pressure plate and all that still work, and will a 14 inch flywheel even fit in the T-5 bellhousing where there was a flywheel 2 inches smaller sitting in it.

Re: Interesting flywheel size issue
No, the larger size flywheel will absolutely NOT fit in the T-5 BH.
If you have a 10.4" clutch, it will fit on a 12.8" flywheel.
If your motor is a 85-back, as it would seem, get the flywheel for 83-85 Camaro/Firebird V8 T-5. Don't worry about what size they say it is, how many teeth, "internal" or "external" balance, or anything else; just go by application. You will find that there are 2 listed. One is for the low-perf grocery-cart cars, with the weenie LG4; the other is for the high-perf L69 cars. The difference is the weight: about 22 lbs vs about 16 lbs. The gutless cars used the heavy one so that the driver wouldn't stall the motor quite so easily trying to take off from a traffic light or whatever. You'll probably want the lighter one.

Thanks thats almost exactly what I was looking for. Does anyoneknow the flywheel size out of an 85 z28? That way I can search for used flywheels rather than blowing 200 bucks on a new one.

Re: Interesting flywheel size issue
Well my shop teacher got me a flywheel for a good price, 14 inch ring gear diameter however. I dunno if itll fit yet because as I was putting on the pressure plate and clutch. The clutch is a 14 spline 9 inch, whereas my input shaft is 26 spline and those only come in 11 inch as far as ive seen.
I guess my only options are
A) find a different pressure plate and clutch from a sbc pre 86 manual
B) Swap in the v6 t-5 WC I just bought and grind down the input shaft so it doesnt drag the clutch and modify the slave cylinder ball-ended rod thing. At least then id have a 4.03 first gear vs 2.95 but that would be really badly rigged because the clutch wouldnt have much to grab.
C) Find someone who sells 9 inch clutches at a good price with 26 splines.
Boy what a project. Woulda been cheaper to buy a v8 camaro in the first place

whatever the stock 83-86 5speed fly is, is what diameter this is ... you won't get a larger diameter flywheel then this in a T-5 bellhousing. It is just the stock 153 tooth flywheel for 2 piece rear main blocks.

Re: Interesting flywheel size issue
this flywheel was mounted to my 82 LG-5 when it had a 5 speed in it. I took it out only because I put a 1990 350 1 piece rear main engine in the car. So yes I'm positive it's for a 2 piece RMS and a 5 speed.
