welding the spider gears?
My factor posi unit is gone and I am a one wheel wonder right now. I just want to make one more pass at the track before the season ends and a buddy of mine told me to weld the spider gears since I do not have the money for a new posi. Now I do plan on having a whole new rear end by the time the new racing season starts so maybe its not a bad idea. I heard of people doing this alot but I cant see this being a good thing. What do you guys think?

Don't do it at the track either. It's illegal under NHRA and IHRA rules.
Welding the spider gears is difficult to do safely, and if done wrong will cause breakage that's likely to lock up the rear wheels and send you spinning out of control.

Re: welding the spider gears?
Welded spider gears are normally in off road only 4x4's or dirt track race cars where they need locked axles but will never get 100% traction.
As mentioned above, they're illegal in IHRA and NHRA and you don't want locked axles in a street car.
Install an open carrier then install something like a Powertrax into it.

Re: welding the spider gears?
I had the spider gears welded in my old 10 bolt for a season. Nobody knew about it. Not everyone has the ability to weld them up properly. I had them professionally done by a welder who knew what he was doing. He also used a high quality steel rod. It's not something you can do with a MIG welder.

my 4.3 chevy in my nissan 4wd toy broke a welded carrier w/ 35's in the slop..... Now you want to do it with a weaker rearend and attempt to hook it?
Either locate a rebuild kit for your posi or upgrade to an aftermarket unit.

Re: welding the spider gears?
With one race left ya might as well just use the open and get some practice launching the car with less than normal traction.
I imagine the time has passed already anyway...
A mini spool is available for $90. Marginally better than welded gears.
