difference between posi and not posi?

ok, i have an 84 camaro that originaly came with a 2.8 v6, i have put a 350 in and and turbo 350 transmission. Rear end is stock, what is my rear end probably, 2,73 maybe? Now i know its not posi, but what the heck is the difference between posi and none posi. Is like semi-lock or something, and if that is what it means, is it posible for me to convert my rear end to posi. Id also like to change the gearing to 3,73's, or 3,42's. Or should i have to get a whole new diff thats all ready posi with does gears inside. Putting these gears in would give me a bit more top speed aye?

Re: difference between posi and not posi?

V6 cars usually had 3.23 or 3.42 gears in it. Remove the rear cover (all 10 bolts), and drain the fluid. Then look at the stamp on the ring gear. It'll say something like 11:42 or something. Then do the math, and see what ratio it is.

You don't know what posi is? That's a tough one to explain, I thought that's a pretty universally known term... Especially to someone who's done their own engine swap! It means both tires spin at once. It's just a trade name, just like "locker".
You can buy a posi and install it.

Going to steeper gears (higher number, ie from 3.23 up to 3.73) gives LESS top speed, but stronger acceleration.

ok thanks buddy, someone mixed me up out here, i thought bigger numbers ment more acceleration, as for posi, i did know it ment both wheels at the same time, but say your taking a corner going left, your drivers side rear wheels should spin slower than the one of the passenger side right, but say its a "locker", it wouldn't let you wheels spin slower from one side or another aye, i don't know if you are getting what i mean here but thanks anyways.

Only in theory. In practice, just about any ratio will allow a higher speed than the engine is capable of propelling the car to.

Re: difference between posi and not posi?

Yea, in theory. My theory only works if the car has enough power to pull to redline in top gear, if not then you may as well keeping adding more gear until it does. My car is now speed limited by RPM and not gearing

Yea, I know what you mean jlccam. If it won't let one wheel turn slower in a corner then it has no differential action in it, that's called a SPOOL. Even a locker should unlock and let you corner normally. Unless you're trying to accelerate through the corner, then it'll lock up.
A locker usually uses gears to lock. A posi usually uses friction clutches.
