Will My 3rd Gen Gears Fit Into My 4th Gen Rear?
I have a 89 Camaro RS with I believe 28 spline axles. The rear has 3.42 Strange gears and an Auburn diff.
I was thinking of buying a 4th gen rear (would like to put wider tires out back)
Will the gears and diff. from the 3rd gen fit into the 4th gen rear or not?
Thank you..........Bill

all you need to worry about are the spline count. If indeed you have 28 spline axles, then yes, the diff and gears will be perfectly fine.

If you never changed the axles and just did the gears I would drop a good bet on it you have 26 spline axles. Stock some late 90's had them, 91&92 always have the 28 spline axles. Since the gears and diff are aftermarket it WOULD have been wise to goto the 28 spline axles but auburn does sell a 26 spline diff that won't work. Then you might be able to save the gears, although many cringe at the fact of putting used gears on a different setup....

I've heard a few of the very late model 89's had the 28 spline rear end, probably the only way to figure it out is to pull the axil and count.
