rear end clunking.

I have had a rear end now for about 5 months that makes a clunking noise when driving. when cruising down the road it makes the noise and in the same gear if i give it a little bit of gas it will go away and if i let of the gas it will go away. i finally lifted the car of the ground and took off the driveshaft to take a closer look. when i turned one rear wheel it would make the noise about 2 times for every one time the when spun in a full revolution. if i spun both wheels at the same time it would double the speed of the sound to about 3.2 times for every one time the wheel would go around once. i figured it had to do with my pinion gear , perhaps a chipped gear tooth; since I have a 3.23:1 ratio in my camaro. does this sound like the problem please help

Re: rear end clunking.

You should check the U-joints first. You may have one thats either excessivly worn or seizing up.

Re: rear end clunking.

but it makes the noise when the driveshaft is totally disconnected from the rear end.

Re: rear end clunking.

I have had a similar noise with two different results.

In my 87 Formula, 84 T/A, and current 88 (all 5 speed cars) they had all worked the nut slightly loose on the pinion gear in the front where it holds the u-joint yoke on. The oil was leaking from the front pinion seal and the pinion gear was literally "falling" deeper inside the rear end grinding against the differential carrier!

In another 'bird I had the "spider" gears start to brake apart and cause a "skipping" sensation similar to what you describe.

Take your cover off and have a good long look inside...
