T56 Clutch master cylinder mount reinforcement???

Hey everyone. You guys that have swapped in a T-56 trans into your cars... Did you do anything to reinforce or beef up the area of the firewall where you cut the master cylinder hole?

The factory 4th gen hole had curved sides so it wasnt as flimsy, but when I push my clutch pedal down, the whole area flexes, causing the rod to not go into the mc body 100% straight.

Im changing master cylinders now, so I figured now is a good time to look into making the area stronger. My ideas are to either make a plate to make the area thicker, or to triangulate the pedal bracket more to make it stronger. If the pedal bracket wont move, the firewall wont move.

Just wondering what if anything you other guys have done...

I put back in the 2 little brackets that go from the pedal pivot bolt down to the U-bolt thing that holds in the MC, just like stock. Works fine. You'd have the same problem if it was a T-5 and those were missing.

Do you have pictures of this?? The car that I used as a donor was an auto to m6 swap car...so I dont exactly know whats stock and whats not...

This sounds interesting tho. Ide like to see what you are referring to.

I have the master bolted through the firewall with two bolts. And then just the regular bracket that goes down to the firewall MC bolts from the pedal assembly. Here is a quick pic...

No, sorry; no pics.

Just go to the junkyard and look at any stick 3rd gen. The brackets I'm talking about are stock. Should have come with your pedal assembly. I have a 83 car with the hydraulics out of about a 84 or 85 in it (I forget, it's been 20 years or more since I got them and put them in), and I just used all of that exactly as it was, with the T-56 MC which bolted in just the same as the T-5 one had.

Definitely make a bracket to triangulate the area. My dad does that on all the manual trans cars he works on. Sorry we dont have pics. We have a manual trans car in the shop right now with the engine out, so I'll see if I can get a pic for you tomorrow.

Re: T56 Clutch master cylinder mount reinforcement???

A picture would be awesome! Im not sure of the best way to reinforce the area...but i have a few ideas. However, i would much rather go off of someone elses PROVEN idea and get it right the first time.

I think the flexing caused the inner seal to wear on my master and caused it to leak out of the cap. I have the rod aligned pretty good and its pretty much a straight shot into the master bore. But as soon as you put pressure on the pedal, the firewall moves before the rod does.

If you can get some pics...that would be great! If not, if you can just desc. to me as good as you can what he does or even sketch it in paint or something on top one of my pics, that would work too.

Thanks for your help!

Sorry, no pics. That car doesnt have the mod yet. Basically you want to weld a bar from the u-shaped piece down to the frame. That creates strength thru triangulation.

Re: T56 Clutch master cylinder mount reinforcement???

Kevin,
Are you suggesting I install a piece of steel from the "U" shaped bracket up to the fram of the pedal assembly? If so, thats sort of what I had in mind. I was going to install slightly longer bolts through the MC and attache the new brace with bolts. So its easily removed.

I was looking at it again today...and I ordered a new clutch master cylinder. I just have to decide if I want to make the new master cyl adjustable or not. I havent made that decision yet....

I have a RAM cylinder now...so i want to see how hard or if its possible to just swap rods. That would avoid using a die on the stock rod and all that jazz...

Re: T56 Clutch master cylinder mount reinforcement???

I have a problem with the alignment on a t-56 swap using 4th gen pedals. I think I need to add one washer to the master such that the clutch pedal pushes the master rod parallel to the master. It appears not to do so and flex the master a bit which I believe led to my master leaking inside the car.

Justin, what did you do to align the rod? I also want to reinforce the assembly to prevent this from happening again. I do not have the u-bolt either. I think I may have got it with the swap, but think that it would not work and used regular bolts instead.
