2 Pinion Seals - Still Leaking???

I have an 89 RS with the factory rear end. I had an Eaton Posi & 3.73 Richmond Ring & pinion put in (i herd richmond arent good for street, but they were given to me free) In the installation by a professional that has done plenty of rear end's, he obviously put in a new pinion with the install. It then began leaking (not a super dripping, just a normal pinion leak, so i took it too him and he said it needs a Speedy sleve, so he put one in along with a new seal "obviously lubing the seal before installing it." This was only days before it was put away for winter. I got it out only days ago and it began to leak again. So it has a speedy sleve and a new seal (from Napa) and it is still leaking. I did wipe it off a bit over the winter in a non heated garage, no big deal i just thought it would be a little wet from sitting all winter. So can anybody think of a reason why a speedy sleve and a new seal is STILL leaking?? Or do i just maybe have bad luck?

Usually if a pinion seal (or axle seal) leaks it means the bearings are on their way out.
I thought the speedy sleeve was a bearing that rides on a different part of the axle, and was only for axle bearings?
How much is it leaking? Small puddle over all winter?

Actually a speedy sleve in this case is a super thin sleve that goes over the pinion at the surface of the seal. And there is no was the bearings could possibly be going out because when my mechanic did the over haul he used all new bearings, both carrier, both pinion, and both axle bearing. As well as axle seals. and the leaking is just a good wetness, not like it is pouring out. So... Now where do i stand???

ah, ok. I was more curious than I had useful info for ya, sorry.
If it's just a tad wet, I wouldn't be too concerned, it might be leaking slowly from under the sleeve? If it's been sitting for a while it's ok if it seeps a bit out. I'd check the fluid level with your pinky and keep going.

Re: 2 Pinion Seals - Still Leaking???

Sam,

You need to have the pinion bearings checked as Sonix said. you also need to take that speedy sleave and throw that pinion yoke in the garbage.

Speedy sleeves are not a good fix and usually end up leaking. A seal works based on a set amount of crush upon the seal flange. When you put in a speedy sleeve the crush is higher and the seal runs at a higher temp. Drastically shortning the life of it. Also if the crush on the seal is off it is not going to ride on the portion of the seal that it was desigend too.

If you check the bearings, fix if needed, and put a new yoke on it with a new seal. Your problem should be fixed.

There is the possibility that the seal could have dried up but that is pretty rare.
