rearend whine only on decceleration
well i finally got around to putting my rear end in a couple weeks ago and it is whining really loud only when i let off the gas and coasting. i talked to an expirienced rearend guy that owns his own shop and he said that the rearend yoke is loose is there a way to tighted this up or is this an adjustment that affects other things inside the rearend?

Well, there is but on deceleration means u have a coast side of the gear issue.
Did you just put the rear end in or did you assemble it?
If you threw it in, I suppose u never know how it was setup before and could give a good tightening to the bearing preload on the pinion. ( Wouldn''t advise this)
Theres one thing u gotta find out, if u assembled it or not. You gotta find out if your backlash and pinion bearing preload is in spec, If not theres your whine
either way i think u may end up tearing it apart, Maybe someone with a tad more insight will chime in
Good luck with it!

You can try to just tighten the yoke. Remove your driveshaft with the 4 5/16" headed bolts at the back. Put the driveshaft on the ground, and observe the massive nut on the yoke. Something like 1 1/4" AF. It's usually red-loctited, so it's rare that it loosens up. Check it.
But I wouldn't just tighten it, like fire350 mentioned, depending on the state of the rear, you probably have to take it out and measure backlash or check the gear pattern with the yellow paint. Reset and tighten the nut.

Re: rearend whine only on decceleration
I suggest that you don't drive the car until your issue is resolved. My 10-bolt is on the garage floor and the car is running on a spare 9-bolt. I had a whine only on decelleration, it was there when I installed the unit "new gears just installed." Yup they were new but the pinion nut was not tight and it backed off allowing the pinion to do some chewing on the carrier. Now it must go in for complete evaluation and reassembly.
If you continue to drive the car and your mech. is correct your problem will only get worse. I know now what to check but learned the hard way what the cause was. Give your mech a ^5 and let him correct the problem.
