shorten driveshaft with 12 bolt?

did a quick search and could not find anything, but, do you need to shorten your driveshaft when swapping a strange or moser 12 bolt?

thanks

Re: shorten driveshaft with 12 bolt?

9" just needed a conversion U-joint since the yoke is a 1350 not 1310. I'm sure the moser would be the same way, the stock length typically is fine, but they do make a longer 1350 yoke that would need a shorter driveshaft.

9" > 12bolt FYI

Re: shorten driveshaft with 12 bolt?

i may go 9", i might as well ask this question, is there a f-body specific center-section or not? and is the moser 9" any good? ive heard they have bolt retention issues. my drive shaft has 1350 joints, i converted it when i bought the shaft so i could do a axle swap later without a conversion u joint

Re: shorten driveshaft with 12 bolt?

the strange rear ends have bolt retention issues, not the moser 9". The centers are all the same the torque arm mounts to the housing not the center. You may have to grind a rib off the center for the torque arm clearance although this was not an issue with my thru-bolt aluminum center. Which by the way is lighter than a 12 bolt now, but not cheap at all. When you're ready to buy a rear, on www.ls1tech.com in the gears/axle section there's a sponsor called exotic performance plus that offers free shipping and has the best prices I could find on the net. Got the rear in under a week as well.

Re: shorten driveshaft with 12 bolt?

I have a Moser 9" in my car and I am very happy with it. I thought I would mention that you can check for proper driveshaft length easily yourself.

When installing the driveshaft pay attention to how far it comes out of the transmission when you are bolting it back up to the rear diff. Ideal travel is about 1".

I suggest this because between my rear diff. and trans. swaps I have some driveline vibration issues. I was made aware of checking my driveshaft length this way from one of the board members here and found my drivshaft to be 1.5" too short. A possible source of my vibration.

Something to keep in mind.

Re: shorten driveshaft with 12 bolt?
