Will going from 3.73s down to 3.42s hurt me that much
Hi guys, I have 3.73s behind my MAF EFI 327 in my 2nd gen. It is an 8.5" 10 bolt posi with older aftermarket gears in it. The rear and posi are totally fine but the gears are very slightly noisy at certain speed/load conditions. Most people would not consider the gears noisy at all, especially for an aftermarket set up, but I am very picky. I have a 3.42 disc posi 8.5" 10 bolt rear for the 2nd gen out of another car, that is low mileage and has less lash than my 3.73s. It is probably going to be dead silent since it has factory gears. I could have just swapped the disc axles and caliper brackets onto my 3.73 rear but like I said, I think the 3.42 rear is going to be nice and quiet.
I am going to be running a roller 350 with World Products Sportsman heads and a custom roller cam I have, which is around .490/.520 lift, and I have a WC T5. Will going to 3.42s from 3.73s really hurt me that much? I figure with the extra torque the 350 will have over my 327, plus the WC T5 has a low 1st, that I am still going to have plenty off the line. My cruise RPMS are going to be almost problematically low (I have the TBI 0.62 O/D) but with the roller cam it should still lug along at what will be like 1400-1500 rpms in OD on the highway.
